For quite some time now, Karthik Subbaraj has been a devoted admirer of Rajinikanth. Although they’ve previously worked on a project together, Karthik still holds the senior actor in high esteem. Lately, there’s speculation about whether Karthik will share his latest work, Retro, with the Jailer star anytime soon.

In a chat with Behindwoods, director Karthik Subbaraj revealed that although Rajinikanth has previewed the trailer and teaser for Retro, he hasn’t had a chance to watch the entire movie yet. Eagerly anticipating the opportunity, the filmmaker expressed his excitement about sharing the romantic actioner with the legendary actor.

According to him, I’ll certainly present “Retro” to the renowned actor Rajinikanth, as soon as his schedule for “Jailer 2” permits. Already, I’ve shared both the teaser and trailer with him, and he found it exceptional; wishing him well.

In one of his past interviews, Karthik Subbaraj originally planned his movie “Retro” for none other than Rajinikanth. But the initial script was primarily an action-packed scenario, that morphed into a romantic plot when presented to Suriya instead.

Ever since I penned this script, I’ve been captivated by the thought of Thalaivar bringing it to life. At first, I crafted it with a focus on action, aiming to align with his iconic image. However, after sharing it with Suriya sir, there was a shift – it transformed into a heartwarming love story. And guess what? Even Suriya sir inquired if I had presented the script to Rajinikanth sir as well!

Revisiting the cinematic masterpiece that is “Retro,” which graced the big screen on May 1, 2025, I found myself squaring off against another blockbuster starring the charismatic Nani in HIT-The Third Case. The clash of these two films left me utterly captivated and yearning for more!

Despite some initial doubts, the movie featuring Suriya has maintained its position at the box office quite well. In just two days, it’s managed to rake in approximately 20.50 crores.

In addition to Suriya, the cast includes Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, Prakash Raj, Karunakaran, Swasika, Sujith Shankar, and several other prominent actors in significant roles.
