As a seasoned Outlander fanatic, I’ve journeyed through time and space alongside Claire and Jamie more times than I can count. The impending ending of this extraordinary saga has me both excited and apprehensive.
Anticipation is building towards the finale of Outlander. Despite our reluctance, we understand that it’s drawing near.
At the New York Comic Con 2024 panel discussion, the subject of the series finale arose. Maril Davis clarified that the television show’s conclusion will differ from the book ending, which is acceptable. In fact, author Diana Gabaldon expresses optimism regarding this departure from the original storyline.
Why Outlander season 8 will end differently to the book
One reason for the finale of ‘Outlander’ season 8 diverging from the book series is that the ending of the books has not been penned down yet by author Diana Gabaldon. Although she has disclosed some aspects with Matthew B. Roberts and Maril Davis, she hasn’t revealed everything. Given her writing style, it wouldn’t be feasible for her to do so.
One reason could be that certain themes from the book haven’t held the same significance in the TV show. With a limited number of episodes, not all aspects can be included, making it understandable that less critical scenes are omitted. The focus of the series seems to have shifted towards personal and war-related dramas, leaving out some of the more fantastical elements such as Claire’s powers and Jamie’s ghostly appearances.
Additionally, at New York Comic Con, Davis mentioned they aimed to pay tribute to Gabaldon by maintaining a level of respect throughout their creative process.
Diana Gabaldon is able to be objective about Outlander
Gabaldon expressed that she’s content with how the TV series concluded versus the books, finding it acceptable that certain aspects differ. She doesn’t express concern over these differences, as they make sense to her, despite acknowledging that the ending of the 10th book remains unknown to all.
The author of ‘Outlander’ expressed that she could maintain an unbiased perspective regarding the TV series finale. She offers praise, noting that the show concludes satisfactorily given the storylines it established. As reported by A.V. Club, she emphasized that “it was skillfully handled.
I was not upset by [the different ending]. It was possible for me to be objective about it because it was well done and will work nicely for the show.
The final season of Outlander is yet to come; we’re currently anticipating the second half of season 7, with season 8 not scheduled to air until 2026.
Outlander season 7B premieres on Friday, Nov. 22 on Starz.
