As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when “Deva,” starring the incredible Shahid Kapoor, hit the big screen on January 31, 2025. Finally, the day had come! The Rosshan Andrrews masterpiece was a spectacle to behold in its full cinematic glory. But just when I thought my heart could burst with joy, Netflix announced that “Deva” would be available for streaming starting March 28, 2025. Now, I can relive those magical moments whenever I want – pure bliss!
The film unfolds around Inspector Dev Ambre, a hot-headed police officer on a quest to uncover the truth behind the demise of his fellow officer and confidant, ACP Rohan D’Silva. As he delves deeper into this case, Dev unfortunately experiences an accident resulting in memory loss.
Currently, he needs to follow his path again to find out who really murdered his friend. A shocking revelation unfolds in the film when the detective realizes that he was the one responsible for his friend’s death.
Dev carried out the crime by setting up a remotely operated high-tech sniper rifle, which he later used to take the life of his coworker. This action followed Rohan’s uncovering of Dev’s association with a notoriously wicked criminal and his undercover role as an informant within the police department.
The Hindi-language action-thriller you’re referring to is a reinterpretation of the 2013 Malayalam movie titled “Mumbai Police,” originally helmed by Rosshan Andrrews. Unlike its highly successful theatrical predecessor, this updated version offers a different resolution.
In the initial adaptation featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran, the narrative opens with ACP Antony Moses probing into the killing of his comrade, ACP Aaryan John Jacob. Despite the parallel plotlines in both films, the Malayalam version presents its lead character differently, not portraying him as a spy or informant.
In the original version, the plot surprise lies in the protagonist, Antony, hiding his homosexuality – a secret his friend eventually uncovers. Worried about revealing his sexuality and the potential damage to his tough persona, Antony perpetrates the crime, sparking the ensuing investigation.
Although the Mumbai Police original version was both critically acclaimed and financially successful, its Hindi adaptation garnered mixed opinions and struggled to draw audiences at the cinema.
Besides featuring Deva, Mumbai Police was also the inspiration for a Telugu adaptation called “Hunt,” which stars Sudheer Babu.
