Destiny 3 Canceled: What's Truly Behind It?

As a seasoned Guardian with countless hours logged in Destiny’s expansive universe, I must admit, the news about Project Payback has left me somewhat bewildered and intrigued. The whispers of a potential third installment were tantalizing, but the revelation that it might have been a spin-off leaves me scratching my helmeted head.

Following “The Final Shape”, there was curiosity among players about what peril lay ahead after they vanquished the Thanos-like entity known as “The Whitness”. The buzz about “Project Payback” online left fans pondering the unknown.

What is Project Payback?

Based on rumors from an unconfirmed source, Project Payback may have been planned as a potential third installment in the series. Yet, it’s important to note that leaks about projects often lack clarity regarding their validity. Following the termination of 220 employees, which accounted for approximately 17% of the studio, the future of Destiny appeared uncertain.

Contrary to what you might have heard, Destiny 3 wasn’t canceled because it never even started brewing in the development phase. Now, you may wonder about that project called Payback that Bungie was tinkering with at an early stage. Well, they decided to shelve that one a while back. Stay tuned for my next post where I’ll share more details on this intriguing topic!

However, they have hinted at a potential new expansion for Destiny 2, named “Codename Frontiers,” which is planned for release in 2025. It remains to be seen whether this will truly materialize as an expansion.
