Bungie’s free-to-play action game Destiny 2 has experienced another record low in simultaneous players due to a lack of engagement with the latest content. After the conclusion of the original series narrative with The Final Shape, the storyline for Revenant in Destiny hasn’t been as successful in attracting players as it once was.
Destiny 2 player numbers hit another all-time low
As Destiny 2’s Revenant Act 3 is about to be unveiled, there was an anticipation that more players would return for fresh content. However, it appears that a significant number of players are choosing to depart from Bungie’s free-to-play game, despite ongoing releases of new content.
Following the conclusion of its primary narrative, Destiny 2 has reached an all-time low in simultaneous players. According to journalist Paul Tassi’s report, approximately 90% of Destiny 2’s initial player base has decreased since the launch of The Final Shape expansion.
Tassi pointed out that the 90% decrease in player numbers for a live, continuing game over a period of seven months is astonishingly high. This is what makes current discussions about the wellbeing of games seem unique compared to previous times.
Despite the fact that it might have been “the end of the arc,” experiencing a 90% decline in an active game after seven months is remarkably steep. This is what makes current discussions about the game’s vitality seem distinct from previous ones.

Ever since its debut in 2017, Bungie’s looter shooter game has experienced periods of both peak and trough player engagement. But after The Final Shape update, no additional content seems to have successfully captivated players. In fact, the game was already showing signs of a downward trend prior to this point.
As Marathon approaches its launch, it appears the studio has an opportunity to offer a fresh gaming experience for players. Yet, for those craving more of the Destiny universe or an enhanced version, it’s starting to look like the game’s duration might be drawing to a close.
Despite that, Bungie continues to put in considerable effort into the development of their looter shooter game, with a series of fresh updates lined up. Following the conclusion of Act 3: Revenant, there are two expansions and four significant updates planned between now and Spring 2026. However, it’s uncertain what will follow after that point.
