As a gamer with years of Destiny 2 under my belt and a wallet that’s seen better days due to this game, I find myself both excited and apprehensive about Bungie’s new roadmap. On one hand, the idea of more content, more expansions, and more seasons sounds like a dream come true. But on the other, my bank account is already weeping at the thought of potentially spending even more money.
With Project: Frontiers, Bungie presented the future of Destiny 2, but players are skeptic.
Future Roadmap Revealed
Looking ahead, Bungie plans to roll out two mid-sized expansion packs annually, as opposed to a single large one. The studio believes this change will help break away from the repeating pattern in their DLC releases, a pattern that has been present since Shadowkeep (2019).
They casually mentioned terms such as “roguelike games,” “survival shooters,” and “Metroidvania-style” games, yet they failed to clarify specifically how the gameplay mechanics or the release strategy will evolve with this upcoming launch.
On one hand, it’s fantastic to observe their dedication towards shaping the game’s future. However, there are several questions left unanswered, particularly regarding the pricing. The recent expansions retail at $49.99 each. Yet, we’re unsure about the cost of the mid-sized expansions. Investing $100 or even $80 per year might seem excessive.
More Expansions, More Seasons
Absolutely, they’re planning to add an extra season to their calendar, making it four seasons a year instead of the usual three. All significant updates will be provided at no cost to all players, though they might introduce a season pass, which would require payment.
Several enthusiasts remain eager to understand the monetization approach Bungie has planned, as the way Destiny 2 is monetized through expansions, seasons, and requiring purchase of older expansions to experience their narrative, might come as a surprise for newcomers.
Let’s face it. It won’t get cheaper.
