As a dedicated Destiny 2 fan, I’ve got to say that Bungie’s latest expansion, Edge of Fate, is all about rejuvenating the spirit of this classic MMO. Admittedly, there have been times when the game has fallen short in attracting newcomers, but with this new content drop, it feels like even long-time players like me are being drawn back in.
As Destiny 2 was grappling with a decline in players, the release of Edge of Fate has only intensified this issue. Launching post-The Final Shape, which concluded the series’ Light and Darkness Saga, Edge of Fate experienced the lowest player count at launch for any expansion so far.
Destiny 2 Edge of Fate isn’t popping off
According to Steam Charts data that pertains solely to PC gamers, Edge of Fate had approximately 100,000 players on Valve’s marketplace upon its release. On the day it was launched, the player count peaked at a high of 99,131, roughly double the typical daily player count of about 20,000 to 30,000 players.
To put it into perspective, the highly anticipated expansion for Destiny 2 last year, The Final Shape, attracted more than 300,000 players. Even expansions that some players disliked, like Lightfall, have still seen significant player numbers at launch.
It’s important to mention that Destiny 2 continues to generate significant revenue through its expansions, such as Edge of Fate which ranks high on Steam’s Top Sellers list. Nevertheless, it’s evident that Bungie’s MMO is not as popular as it once was, mainly because the game struggles to attract new players into its fold.
The Edge of Fate marks the beginning of an entirely fresh tale within Destiny 2, and it’s the initial expansion in the Year of Prophecy, with two expansions planned in total. This new content offers a campaign that isn’t strictly linear, presenting some innovative concepts for Bungie’s MMO, but unfortunately, this latest release doesn’t tackle any of the key problems preventing players from diving into the free-to-play game.
A significant problem arises due to the massive deletion of content over time, which in turn leads to a challenging onboarding process. This means that a large portion, possibly even a third, of Destiny 2’s initial content has been removed from the game, making it difficult to attract new players when a substantial part of the story is no longer present.
