Destiny 2 dev Bungie convinced Naughty Dog to scrap Last of Us Online to keep pursuing single-player, reveals ex-PlayStation boss

Sony has abandoned several live-service ventures, which includes Concord shortly after its debut, but none of these cancellations sting quite like the shelving of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Online initiative – a project inspired by the exceptional combat mechanics seen in The Last of Us Part 2.

In a recent conversation, the former head of PlayStation Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, disclosed that Naughty Dog’s multiplayer game was in fact exceptional, yet the process of creating it absorbed an excessive amount of attention, thereby hindering the progress of its single-player development.

During a chat on Sacred Symbols (as reported by Push Square), Yoshida admitted to having played The Last of Us’ online spin-off on numerous occasions. In his view, the game was genuinely “excellent”, and the team put a lot of heart into crafting it.

According to Yoshida, the concept for The Last of Us Online originated with Naughty Dog. They were eager to bring it to life, but Bungie shared with them the requirements involved in creating live service games.

For several years, Naughty Dog had been working on The Last of Us Online, a project that left many fans in disbelief when it was ultimately cancelled. Initially thought to be a straightforward multiplayer adaptation of the original game’s combat, the project was actually intended by Naughty Dog to be a much more expansive multiplayer experience than what was initially anticipated.
