Design Dysphoria, a design exhibition led by the queer community, has placed “Give Them the Fantasy” at Gotham’s Chelsea gallery for their second annual display. This event, held during Pride month, emphasizes the creativity, camaraderie, and resilience of LGBTQIA+ designers and creatives, shining a light on their shared experiences.
In a statement, they expressed that the queer community strongly connects with and shapes the spaces it creates, yet there’s still a necessity and chance to create more spots specifically designed for queer expression and fellowship. As anti-LGBTQIA+ discourse escalates in today’s world, these dedicated areas become increasingly vital. The collective visualizes their common vision as a place that is both defiant, full of joy, and aesthetically pleasing – a refuge against adversity.
24 artists specializing in various fields such as video, furniture design, glasswork, lighting, and more, are featured in this exhibition, which is organized by designers Liz Collins, Grace Whiteside from Sticky Glass, and Erica Sellers and Jeremy Silberberg of Studio S II. Currently on display, the vibrant textile art of Liz Collins is displayed through a circular opening in a wall, while the “Sticky” glass creations of Grace Whitesides hang from the ceiling, resembling molten structures. Throughout the gallery, the glasswork of Studio S II showcases amorphous vessels and an otherworldly coffee table that exude a slime-like, alien aesthetic.
In other areas, you’ll come across various art pieces: Deborah Czeresko’s handcrafted glass items, Francheska Alcántara’s textured wall artworks, Jeremy Martin’s artistic floor lamps that combine sculpture and functionality, Savannah Knoop’s expressive sculptures, and numerous other distinctive design objects. Each piece stands out on its own, yet they all embody a common theme – a touch of surrealism, ambiguity, and sensuality that is typical of modern queer aesthetics.
At our fresh Chelsea location, combining a unique art gallery with a dispensary for the first time, Rachel Berks, VP of Gotham Creative, expressed excitement about cultivating a space that allows Design Dysphoria curators and other artists to develop an original queer artistic hub within the bustling design scene of the city.
Experience the captivating “Give Them the Fantasy” exhibit by Design Dysphoria at Gotham’s Chelsea Gallery (located at 146 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011) until August 1st, 2025.
