Today, January 10, the highly anticipated sequel to “Den of Thieves” titled “Panthera” officially hits US theaters. As reviews for the follow-up begin to pour in, it’s clear that they surpass those of the first movie. The film is garnering impressive ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Interestingly, while the original movie didn’t receive an overall positive critique from critics on either platform, user reviews were far more favorable towards the crime-thriller genre. Here are some early critic reviews for “Panthera”.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera reviews call it ‘a fun sequel’
Chris Bumbray from JoBlo’s Movie Network described Den of Thieves 2: Pantera as a “fun sequel that surpasses the original.” He also pointed out that this second film exudes a “distinctive, Euro-flavored ambiance” which he believes offers a fresh perspective compared to its precursor.
According to Pete Hammond from Deadline Hollywood, Gerard Butler’s return as the lead in Den of Thieves 2 makes it an excellent fit for Butler’s talent and rugged charm, and a sequel that, while not particularly original, is still worth watching following the original film. Hammond also highlights that the movie is effortlessly entertaining, thanks to its stellar cast and diverse shooting locations, with a significant portion being filmed in the United Kingdom and Canary Islands.
According to Owen Gleiberman from Variety, Christian Gudegast, who also directed the initial film, was praised as an “invigorating director” even though the movie exhibited a certain “disregard for plausibility.” In his review, Gleiberman notes that Gudegast effectively captures the intensity of the hand-to-hand confrontations and has a knack for highlighting Butler’s talent.
According to Christian Zilko from Indie Wire, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is on track to become one of the most entertaining new films of the first 5 days of 2025, despite seemingly insurmountable odds.
Den of Thieves 2’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores are better than original
In its initial review cycle, Den of Thieves 2: Panthera has earned a generally positive response, boasting a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 60 out of 100, based on 18 and 13 reviews respectively. This early feedback classifies the movie as having a “mixed or average” reception, but it already surpasses the original film’s scores, which stood at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic. Despite the mixed to negative critiques from critics, the 2018 Den of Thieves proved to be a commercial triumph with a devoted fan base. Given this trend, Den of Thieves 2 appears poised to replicate the success of its predecessor.
