As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can appreciate the ambition and spirit of Team Jade’s Delta Force project. Having grown up playing the original 90s entries, it’s heartening to see the series resurface with a fresh take on tactical gameplay.
Team Jade, a Chinese developer, is diligently working on the early access version of Delta Force, a fresh, free-to-play tactical shooter set to debut on Steam on December 5, 2024. Although it’s been likened to games such as Black Ops 6 and Battlefield, Design Director Ricky Liao wants players to understand that the team isn’t aiming to challenge the titans of the gaming industry. Instead, they’re focusing on creating their unique experience.
In a chat with VideoGamer, Liao shared that their team isn’t intending to rival Call of Duty, Battlefield, or any other shooter games. Instead, the Tencent-supported project is striving to create a distinct niche in the free-to-play market, initially on PC and subsequently on mobile devices and consoles.
Delta Force isn’t competing
In contrast to the inevitable associations drawn between different first-person shooter (FPS) games, Liao clarified that the development team doesn’t view other shooters, particularly Call of Duty, as rivals. Although they appreciate Call of Duty, the creators of the forthcoming free-to-play FPS game aim to avoid comparisons that undermine the unique qualities of their upcoming project.
Liao stated, “Call of Duty (CoD) is one of my preferred video game series. We don’t view other shooter games as rivals, particularly CoD. If you compare our gameplay to Delta Force, you’ll notice that it offers a unique experience compared to the typical CoD game. Consequently, our main objective is to develop a game that is enjoyable and innovative while also testing players’ strategic skills.
In contrast to the original 90s versions of Delta Force, the latest iteration adopts a less formal approach but emphasizes tactical gameplay. The focus is not only on its gunplay but also on the expansive maps it offers, striving for a more authentic feel compared to other shooter games available today.
Liao expressed that playing Delta Force as children was a significant inspiration for the team, making it an incredible honor and drive to develop a fresh Delta Force game. He emphasized that this wasn’t just another arcade game but one requiring strategic thinking. When they embarked on creating the new Delta Force, they made sure to instill their first rule: the game should be tactical, demanding both manual dexterity and mental acuity from players.
Instead of just slapping on modern graphics, I realized that reviving this classic gaming series demanded some adjustments to the gameplay mechanics, not just a time travel from the old days.
They pointed out that it’s important to remember that the last Delta Force game was released more than a decade ago. If we aim to replicate that exact experience in terms of controls, movements, and animations, it might not resonate well with today’s gaming standards.
Regardless, the team intends to preserve the essential character of the FPS series, reintroducing large battlegrounds, strategic shooting mechanics, and a more deliberate gameplay speed compared to something like Call of Duty. While it may not reach the same level of hardcore intensity as the earliest games in the series, it’s still set to deliver an authentic experience.

The game will be released on Steam towards the end of this year, while a console adaptation for Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile platforms is currently under development.
