As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Hideo Kojima’s work has been a significant part of my virtual journey. From Metal Gear Solid to Death Stranding, his games have always pushed boundaries and offered unique storytelling experiences.
Hideo Kojima has given an update on the forthcoming Death Stranding movie.
2019’s Death Stranding is a video game helmed by Kojima and developed by his company, Kojima Productions. Sony Interactive Entertainment published it. In December 2022, news broke out about a cinematic adaptation of this game. Later on, it was disclosed that A24 will jointly produce the upcoming film.
Speaking with Variety, Kojima confirmed that he doesn’t plan to direct the Death Stranding movie.
What did Hideo Kojima say about the Death Stranding movie and Jordan Peele?
He stated that Death Stranding has always been a game to him. Although others describe it as feeling like a movie, he created it with a gaming focus – the concept, the environments, and the narrative. Therefore, he doesn’t plan on revisiting it from a cinematic perspective. Instead, he hopes that film enthusiasts will appreciate it. He’ll oversee the plot development and offer assistance, but he won’t be the director at this time due to three ongoing projects. Instead, he’ll collaborate with a trusted director. Possibly after completing Physint, he might direct a movie himself or Kojima Productions could produce one. The future is uncertain!
As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled about the joint venture between Kojima and Jordan Peele on their upcoming game, OD. When inquired if Peele might direct the Death Stranding movie, given their partnership, Kojima didn’t dismiss the idea entirely; yet, he also hinted at other directors with whom he shares strong professional bonds.
Beyond just collaborating with Jordan Peele, I also maintain strong bonds with directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, and George Miller – some of whom are featured in Death Stranding. We frequently discuss the possibility of working on a project jointly. At present, movies and video games exist as separate entities, but it won’t be long before they become quite similar. Instead of turning Nope into a game or having Jordan Peele adapt Death Stranding for film, our focus is on creating something entirely novel together.
As a gamer, I’m eagerly waiting, but no one’s stepped up yet to guide this game-turned-movie project. There’s no concrete launch date on my calendar just yet.
