In a straightforward manner, Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding stood out as one of the most visually stunning games on PlayStation 4, and it maintains its visual appeal today. However, ahead of the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, some critics claim that the game doesn’t seem to have significantly improved from its original version. Interestingly, Akio Sakamoto, the chief technical officer, shares this perspective.
In a conversation with EDGE Magazine, Sakamoto stated that the leap from PS4 to PS5 hardware isn’t as substantial as one might expect. Yet, the enhanced hardware of the current-generation console facilitates smoother and more efficient processing.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Sakamoto shared that the PS5’s advanced features like its speedy SSD and powerful GPU do streamline development processes. Yet, it was pointed out that the studio can’t create as substantial improvements as seen when transitioning from PS3 to PS5.
As a dedicated gamer myself, I must say that the noticeable enhancement is definitely in the reduced load times, yet if I’m being honest, the distinction between the two gaming systems isn’t as stark. Instead, it seems that on the PS5, there are more streamlined methods to achieve the same objectives.
The stronger GPUs in both the standard PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro provide the Death Stranding 2 artists with a wider range to build their world, eliminating the need for complex workarounds. Nevertheless, Sakamoto highlighted that these advancements can also impact other aspects of the game’s development process.
As a fan, I’d rephrase that as: “Now, our artists have the liberty to bring their visions to life without worrying about workarounds for certain levels. However, this freedom has also presented some technical hurdles for our programming team. In a sense, it seems like our artists are now steering the creative ship with unrestrained imagination!
Death Stranding 2 appears not to show a significant graphical improvement over its original version, but then again, few games do. Kojima Productions’ work consistently ranks among the most visually stunning in the entire gaming industry, and so far, little has been shown that looks significantly better. Although technologies like ray-tracing have made games appear more realistic, this effect is relatively minor compared to the leaps we’ve witnessed in previous generations.
