Six years have passed since Death Stranding debuted on PS4, yet its sequel is about to arrive. Before the advent of COVID-19, this captivating Hideo Kojima production quickly gained a devoted fanbase, earning status as a cherished cult classic. Now, it’s available not only on PC and Xbox but also on mobile devices.
Following the launch of Death Stranding, Kojima Productions swiftly began work on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The development process, however, was significantly delayed by the impact of the pandemic on global production timelines.
Death Stranding 2 should’ve released years ago
As I chat with GQ, Hideo Kojima shares an intriguing tidbit: Death Stranding 2 was initially slated for release much earlier. However, the global pandemic threw a wrench in our plans, as filming major scenes involving actors became nearly impossible due to stringent travel restrictions.
As a gamer, I was all set to begin filming the opening sequence for Death Stranding 2, with Léa Seydoux making her grand entrance, back in the spring of 2020. However, as fate would have it, Covid-19 had other plans. This unforeseen pandemic disrupted my ability to capture actor performances through scanning and prevented me from conducting any new casting sessions, thereby delaying our intended 2023 release date.
Due to this significant production hold-up, it appears that the early announcements of Hideo Kojima’s next two projects might have come earlier than expected. As development was pushed back, concepts for his upcoming horror game with Jordan Peele, titled OD, and the Metal Gear Solid successor, Physint, were born in Kojima’s mind.
Following six years of dedicated work on Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Hideo Kojima is eager to explore fresh concepts. He’s shared that he has ideas for a third installment in the series, but another team will be tasked with its creation. Moreover, Kojima, as the game director, also intends to delve into film direction, while Kojima Productions continues to develop games.
