As a die-hard Marvel fan with a soft spot for Nicolas Cage and his unforgettable portrayal of Ghost Rider, I must say I was thrilled to learn about the talks of his potential return in Deadpool & Wolverine. The thought of seeing Johnny Blaze grace our screens once again sent shivers down my spine! Alas, it seems that fate had other plans for us this time around.
In the ongoing battle for box office supremacy between Deadpool and Wolverine, it’s been revealed that Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider was almost part of a movie where we later saw appearances by Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Chris Evans portraying Johnny Storm/Human Torch. These characters are just a few among many who made cameo appearances in the film.
Ryan Reynolds reveals talks of Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider return
In a recent chat, Ryan Reynolds – the actor, co-scripter, and producer behind Deadpool and Wolverine – disclosed discussions about Nicholas Cage revisiting his character as Johnny Blaze / Ghost Rider for the film. However, despite enthusiasm from Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance fans, those plans didn’t come to fruition in the end.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve been excitedly pondering over the possibility of Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider making an appearance in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie. In a recent chat with Collider, director Shawn Levy hinted that this idea was indeed discussed, but it didn’t quite pan out. While Reynolds remained tight-lipped on the subject, his subtle hints suggested that while it was a fascinating notion, it unfortunately didn’t come to fruition.
Under Mark Steven Johnson’s leadership, Ghost Rider received largely unfavorable reviews from critics, with a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 140 reviews. Despite this, the movie was financially successful, grossing $228.7 million worldwide against its production budget of $110 million. The reception for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance by critics was even poorer, earning a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 120 reviews. However, it still managed to generate between $132.6 – $149.4 million globally, surpassing its $57 million budget.
In December 2023, Cage mentioned to Uproxx that he might reprise his role as Ghost Rider if an opportunity arose that seemed exciting or engaging. Interestingly, the Academy Award-winning actor has been announced to voice another Marvel character, Spider-Man Noir, in the upcoming movie “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” Additionally, he will take on the live-action role of this character in the MGM Plus and Amazon Prime Video series titled “Spider-Man Noir.”
Significantly, Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds collaborated on providing voices for the characters in the 2013 animated film “The Croods” and its 2020 follow-up “The Croods: A New Age.”
