Deadpool & Wolverine: Rob Liefeld on Why Josh Brolin’s Cable Was Missing

In their newest production, Marvel Studios combined Deadpool and Wolverine, reviving beloved characters from Fox’s X-Men series. However, one crucial figure was left out – Josh Brolin’s Cable. Rob Liefeld, co-creator of Deadpool, recently discussed the character’s absence on social media, causing a stir among fans. The audience has wondered why Cable, who played a pivotal role in Deadpool 2, wasn’t present in the latest release. This film was rich with multiverse elements and references, making Cable’s omission even more conspicuous.

Rob Liefeld claims Josh Brolin’s Cable was ‘blocked’ from Deadpool & Wolverine

Rob Liefeld, one of the creators of Deadpool, has claimed that Marvel Studios stopped Josh Brolin’s Cable from appearing in a Deadpool and Wolverine project. On January 8, 2025, Liefeld tweeted on X (previously known as Twitter), “It was a huge mistake to prevent him from being part of Deadpool & Wolverine. What a terrible move!” He also posted a piece of fan art depicting Brolin as DC’s Darkseid.

As a dedicated gamer, I was bummed out when Brolin, who brought Cable to life in Deadpool 2, announced back in February 2024 that he probably wouldn’t be back for the third film. However, it seems like Cable is still a central character in the franchise. In the latest movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, there were two instances where Cable was mentioned.

First off, when Deadpool was discussing the X-Force team with Happy Hogan, he hinted that the team didn’t go over so well during testing, particularly with Cable. Later on, when speaking to Mr. Paradox, Deadpool questioned if his use of Cable’s time machine in Deadpool 2 might have been the reason for the poor reception of the X-Force team. It appears that Cable’s absence from the third installment won’t diminish his impact on the franchise.

In a December 2024 interview with Collider, Brolin indicated his desire to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), stating that he’d be open to whatever roles the Russo brothers asked him to play. With the Russos confirmed to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, fans are now excitedly discussing the possibility of Brolin resurfacing as Thanos in these upcoming films.

At the moment, there’s no definitive announcement about Brolin participating in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ventures, be it as Cable or Thanos. The fans are eagerly anticipating more news concerning his role in future projects.
