As a longtime Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall of many superheroes, I found the recent “Deadpool & Wolverine” film to be a breath of fresh air. The movie’s success not only at the box office but also in revitalizing the MCU is truly commendable. The “Marvel Jesus” line, which initially seemed like a jab at the MCU’s recent struggles, has now been clarified by director Shawn Levy as an early joke that simply fit the character of Wade Wilson.
The movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is still making a big impact at box offices globally, shattering several records along the way. Apart from its financial triumph, this film continues to add to the success of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One amusing joke in the trailer that drew fans’ attention was when Deadpool referred to himself as “Marvel Jesus.” Later on, director Shawn Levy offered an explanation for this line, offering more insight into the dialogue.
Shawn Levy clears the air around ‘Marvel Jesus’ line in Deadpool & Wolverine
During a recent conversation, director Shawn Levy revealed that the “Marvel Jesus” joke had been penned down much earlier than when the Marvel Cinematic Universe started to suffer from a series of underperforming films.
Since Iron Man graced our screens back in 2008, Marvel Studios has been on an incredible journey, expanding and excelling with each new project. Yet, some have observed a dip in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) success starting from Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The much-anticipated MCU sequel The Marvels unfortunately became the biggest box office bomb of 2023, allegedly costing Disney a staggering $200 million. This set the stage for Deadpool’s long-awaited entry into the MCU, promising a fresh start for the franchise. With that in mind, the “Marvel Jesus” joke seemed to hint at this new chapter being not just about renewal but also about reaping profits once more.
On the contrary, Levy has recently put forth a contrasting perspective, suggesting that the line wasn’t intended as a jab at the MCU’s current situation. During an interview with ComicBook.com, he commented, “What I will say is that we wrote that line well before there was such a significant discussion about superhero exhaustion.” He further explained that this comment was made before the release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘The Marvels’, implying that the line’s relevance to the ongoing conversation about superhero fatigue was merely coincidental.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: “Later on, we delved deeper into the humor behind Deadpool’s ‘Marvel Jesus’ quip. He explained how Wade being given a chance to ascend to the big leagues and his over-the-top confidence in proclaiming himself a messiah was just hilarious and so characteristic of Wade Wilson. That was one of the early jokes that made us chuckle.”
The combined earnings of Deadpool and Wolverine from worldwide box offices currently stand at approximately $824.1 million, and it’s anticipated that this figure will keep growing in the upcoming weeks.
