Deadpool & Wolverine Director Addresses Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman Divorce Jokes

As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I found myself pleasantly amused by the clever use of humor in Deadpool & Wolverine. The jokes about Hugh Jackman‘s separation and Ben Affleck’s divorce, while potentially touchy subjects, were handled with a delicate touch and consent from all parties involved. It’s refreshing to see such playful banter in a superhero movie, especially when it’s done tastefully.

Film Director Shawn Levy is sharing insights on the humor involving Hugh Jackman’s and Ben Affleck’s fictional divorces that were featured in the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine“.

In July 2024, the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie starring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, hit theaters in the United States. This film contains a humorous scene that subtly references Jackman’s real-life separation from his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

Furthermore, another scene within the movie touches upon Ben Affleck’s and Jennifer Garner’s separation, with Garner portraying the character Elektra in the film.

What did Shawn Levy say about Deadpool & Wolverine’s divorce jokes?

As a lover of humor and variety, I can assure you that every joke was shared with the full approval of everyone involved in the process.

“He clarified that we always checked with someone before making a joke, whether it was a written line or an improvisation during filming. This was to ensure everyone felt at ease and we weren’t mocking anyone unfairly. The jokes, like the one about Daredevil or Hugh’s character letting himself go after divorce, would only be included if the performers found them amusing.”

Initially, there were whispers that Affleck might play Daredevil alongside Deadpool and Wolverine, but after some initial discussions, it was decided that he wouldn’t be returning to the roles. (Levy stated this.)

Initially, when we had a menu of 70 Marvel characters to choose from, Daredevil was among them, but no further discussions or invitations were made regarding him afterwards. However, as our project progressed, we reached out to every actor featured in the Fox tribute reel that appeared halfway through our closing credits – and there were quite a few who contributed to the Fox legacy. It was enjoyable for us to create a heartfelt tribute to those years, those characters, and the actors who brought them to life.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in United States theaters.
