Deadlock: Valve Releases Their Own Overwatch Lookalike In Early Access

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the early days of Wolfenstein 3D to the modern-day marvels like Fortnite and League of Legends. Now, here comes Deadlock, a promising newcomer that seems to be a blend of Overwatch and DOTA 2, two games I’ve sunk countless hours into.

Title “Deadlock,” developed by Valve, has extended invitations to a multitude of Steam users for an early access trial. Let’s delve into the essence of this game and consider if it could potentially supplant Overwatch.

What Is Deadlock?

In simpler terms, Deadlock is a team-based game similar to Overwatch, where each participant selects a character, equipped with distinct abilities from a pool of four. The objective for both sides is to control the map by outplaying their opponents.

In this game, however, there’s a twist inspired by Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, specifically reminiscent of DOTA 2. The map layout is similar, featuring distinct lanes where computer-controlled minions fight alongside your team to overpower the opposing side.

Instead of traditional towers standing watch on either side, colossal metal robots known as “walkers,” armed with flamethrowers, will now act as your defenders along the lane.

In essence, the objective seems to revolve around vanquishing an adversary’s Patron, a hovering orb that retaliates with all its might. It sounds like a fusion of gameplay elements from Overwatch and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games such as DOTA 2.

How Does Deadlock Feel To Play?

A tester from “The Verge” described the game like this:

This isn’t a Valorant or Apex Legends-like game where snappy aim is key. It feels like Overwatch, or maybe even more so Team Fortress 2 in its floaty, wear-down-their-health gameplay.

It suggests that in this game, it might take some time to defeat your adversary because each player has a considerable amount of health. This is unlike games like Valorant or CoD where the players have less health and the time to kill is shorter. Here, both you and your opponent can endure or recover from a significant amount of damage, resulting in a prolonged time-to-kill.

In the course of gameplay, you’ll discover methods to activate your characters’ special abilities and purchase skills within your base, much like in Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas (MOBAs). To re-enter the fray swiftly, utilize zip lines. When discussing movement, know that you can perform slides, dashes, air dashes, dash jumps, double jumps, and mantle yourself onto ledges!

Deadlock’s Heroes Will Feel Very Familiar…

On the debut, there will be twenty heroes in Deadlock, and it’s evident that Overwatch has significantly impacted the character design of this game. For instance, you’ll find a female sniper with long hair, a ninja, as well as traditional characters like an archer and a swordsman. To tell the truth, these character designs seem a bit overly similar to me…

It’s crucial to have friends on Steam, as approximately 18,000 fortunate gamers received their early access invitations this way! If one of your friends happens to hold an early access invitation, they can quickly extend it to you for the game.
