As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the buzz around Valve’s latest creation, Deadlock, has truly ignited my gaming spirit once again. Having witnessed the rise and fall of countless games, I can confidently state that the 170,000 concurrent players during its playtest is a testament to the game’s potential.
Last week, it was revealed that Valve’s latest game, Deadlock, has made its grand entrance. This revelation has sparked a significant wave of interest in the third-person shooter MOBA genre. A key factor contributing to this buzz is that a playtest for the game went live, with access granted exclusively through invitations from those who were already playing. Remarkably, Deadlock appears to have ignited rapidly due to an impressive 170,000 simultaneous players on Steam over the weekend.
During the past week, Deadlock’s simultaneous player counts on SteamDB increased significantly as the game underwent one of its initial major playtests. The title recorded a high point (at the moment of this writing) of 171,490 players on Monday, September 2, 2024 around noon Pacific Time/3 p.m. Eastern Time. Since access to the Deadlock playtest was granted only through invitations by friends who already owned it or by Valve employees, these numbers are impressive for a playtest.

It’s beneficial indeed that Valve is the creator of Deadlock, as they seldom release failures. Deadlock seems to offer an intriguing twist on both hero shooters and MOBAs. The game breaks some rules by incorporating four lanes and a diverse cast of characters who can play any role. Each character in the game has unique and entertaining traits.
We certainly zeroed in on our own favorite characters this last weekend, but it seems so did over 170,000 others. As the game continues to develop, stay tuned to our Deadlock topic for more updates and guide coverage.
