Dcu’s James Gunn Shares His Dog’s Reaction to Krypto

James Gunn, the director of Superman, has recently posted a new clip featuring his dog Ozu’s adorable response to the live-action debut of Superman’s canine companion, Krypto. Set to appear in the upcoming Superman movie, due for release on July 11, 2025, this will be Krypto’s first time gracing our screens. Gunn revealed Krypto’s inclusion in the storyline back in October 2024 with a photo and a statement about his inspiration drawn from his own dog, Ozu.

James Gunn explains how Ozu responds to Krypto in a new clip

Director James Gunn, known for Superman, shared a video of his dog, Ozu, watching Krypto the Superdog – a character based on Ozu.

As a passionate fan, I’m sharing an exciting moment from a clip posted by Gunn (on X, formerly Twitter). In this delightful scene, his dog, Ozu, is seen enthusiastically barking at the on-screen action featuring Krypto and Superman, with Ozu playfully chasing after Krypto across the screen. Amidst the laughter, Gunn, who happened to be recording this heartwarming moment, casually mentioned in the background, “Here’s my dog, Ozu, barking at the screen. Fun fact: Krypto was actually 3D-modeled based on Ozu’s physical attributes. We captured Ozu in 3D and transformed him into Krypto. After turning him white, every time he sees himself on screen, he seems determined to outsmart himself!

In response to several viewers’ reactions, Gunn commented on one post about Ozu, saying “He may appear adorable, but he does it persistently throughout the day.” Furthermore, he disclosed that his dog has learned the whistle cue Superman uses to call Krypto in the trailer, and “he dashes from across the house to pounce at the screen.

When sharing the news about Krypto joining the new DCU, Gunn wrote, “Krypto will appear on screens in Superman this summer. Our pet dog, Ozu, served as inspiration for Krypto. He’d burst into our home, chew up our belongings, shoes, and even my laptop! I recall thinking, ‘What a hassle if Ozu had superpowers!’ And so, Krypto entered the script, transforming the narrative.
