DC Studios is designing a unique logo specifically for their Elseworlds productions, which will differ from the standard DC Logo and Fanfare featured in their in-universe projects such as “Creature Commandos” and the forthcoming “Superman.
As a movie reviewer, I recently found myself pondering over the absence of the DC Studios logo in some of their popular shows like ‘Harley Quinn’ and ‘The Penguin’. Intrigued by this observation, I reached out to James Gunn, co-head of the studio, who graciously answered my query on social media. He explained that while all DC television and film projects fall under the DC Studios umbrella, the reason these specific shows don’t bear the studio logo is due to their pre-existing nature. Since ‘Harley Quinn’ was developed before the formation of DC Studios, it wasn’t deemed fair to retroactively attach the studio fanfare. For ‘The Penguin’, however, a unique DC Studios animation is used at the end credits. Lastly, James hinted that an Elseworlds opening is currently being worked on for future DC Studios productions.

In simpler terms, Elseworlds is a label for stories published by DC Comics that don’t fit within their main universe. These tales often explore ‘what if’ scenarios, like what would happen if Superman was raised in a different way or Batman became a villain. The Elseworlds concept debuted in 1989 and presents alternate realities that differ from the usual stories seen in DC’s regular comics.
Changing the beginning of a project isn’t just a clever suggestion, it serves as an effective method to immediately inform the audience whether the upcoming content belongs to the main DC Universe or stands alone.
