As a dedicated DayZ fan who’s spent countless hours braving Chernarus and Livonia, I must say that this Frostline DLC is like a breath of fresh, frigid air! The introduction of the wintry map “Sakhal” promises a new layer of challenge for survivalists like myself. The heat system, cold temperatures, and disease mechanics add an exciting twist to the gameplay, making it feel fresh and immersive.
Bohemia Interactive, a studio based in the Czech Republic, has chosen to combine their primary game, DayZ, with the Livonia DLC that was launched in 2019. This merger means that the main game now incorporates the old DLC’s map and features free of charge, which is likely to excite console players since they will now have more content to enjoy. Prior to this update, DayZ only had one official map available without any additional DLC offerings.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve got to say, PC gamers have had an edge with a wide array of customized maps to explore, ranging from lush tropical landscapes, icy winter wonderlands, and barren tundra. On the other hand, DayZ console players have been limited to the “Chernarus” and “Livonia” maps up until now.
This downloadable content (DLC) appears to cater mainly to PlayStation and Xbox players initially, offering them fresh content while bypassing Steam mods. However, it’s worth noting that this DLC is equally enjoyed by the PC gaming community as well. If its popularity persists, it could potentially stimulate the creation of a potential DayZ 2.
Sakhal – New map with tough challenges
The Frostline DLC unveils the snowy map “Sakhal”, inspired by the Russian island of Kamchatka. Sakhal showcases a severe, volcanic, and frozen terrain, with a towering volcano as its central feature, encircled by smaller islands on the outskirts of the map. These smaller islands often contain precious end-game resources for DayZ gamers and survival enthusiasts, making the different loot paths vital to their gameplay.
As a newcomer, I embark on an adventure starting from the north coast, determinedly making my way south in search of superior loot. The essentials – food, water, and clothing – are paramount in the early stages. On Sakhalin Island, the priority is swiftly acquiring warm garments and quenching my thirst at a well.
Search for sustenance like canned meats or creatures whose flesh you can prepare, but exercise caution! Different from other maps, here, you must thaw your provisions first since it is perpetually cold on Sakhalin.
Innovative areas, diseases and animals
On your newly explored 105 square meter map, you’ll find creatures such as foxes, rabbits, and deer. The deer are the only edible ones here; feel free to indulge in their meat without any second thoughts. However, keep an eye out for adorable foxes and rabbits too. You might also run into bears and wolves. While they may look charming, they can be unfriendly, so it’s advisable to retreat whenever possible, especially without a firearm.
On Sakhal, unlike other maps, it is no longer safe to consume bear or wolf meat due to a new challenge set by Bohemia. Eating either of these animals carries a risk of contracting a disease which can only be treated with specific medication, and the chance of this happening is roughly 50%.
346 additional sounds, such as those for snow, wind, and animals, have been incorporated to establish a soothing ambiance on the frigid island of Sakhal. Each plant species now possesses its unique sound environment for an even more immersive experience. Additionally, there are new textures, redesigned structures, and cold-resistant clothing options. To enhance realism, inventory capacity has been scaled back.
The heat system
On many occasions, the heating system encourages you to sit near the fireplace and dry your belongings. Ensure that your fire remains lit for an extended period to maximize the “warmth advantage”. This feature is also called the “heat buff” on the revised map “Namalsk”, and the game developers have worked hard to improve it.
The temperature gauge may indicate up to three additional signs, represented by ‘+’. For safe travel over extended distances without encountering fire hazards, it’s recommended to proceed only when all three ‘+’ signs are visible.
The updated temperature control system considers elevation and diverse landscapes. If your character is in higher altitudes, such as mountains, they’ll cool down quicker, especially during snowstorms. Food intake can also affect their body temperature.
It’s best to consume warm meals as they help maintain an active body heat for longer periods compared to cold or nearly frozen foods that can cool you down rapidly. Instead of keeping items in your clothing, store them in your backpack or fanny pack. To get the most out of warm food, carry it close to your body rather than in a separate container.
