As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that David Harbour brings Eric Frankenstein to life in the DC Universe animated series “Creature Commandos.” In a fascinating interview, Harbour hinted at his desire to breathe life into this character in live-action as well. It’s worth mentioning that Harbour also plays Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The DC Comics adaptation of Frankenstein is rooted in Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic novel “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus,” where our character, Eric Frankenstein, finds his origins.
David Harbour gives a ‘go ahead’ to playing Frankenstein in live-action DCU
In a chat with Collider, David Harbour shared his aspiration to bring Eric Frankenstein to life on screen following his performance in Creature Commandos. He also mentioned that he’s had discussions about this role with DC Universe co-head, James Gunn.
Regarding a potential live-action role as Eric Frankenstein, Harbour expressed, “I’m all for it! Go ahead and propose it! I think it would be really enjoyable. We’ve tossed around the idea casually.” He further mentioned, “There are no concrete plans yet, but I’ve discussed with him (Gunn) about the practicalities of such a role, specifically regarding CGI or practical effects, and he had a wealth of creative thoughts and concepts.
The actor from Stranger Things mused about where the character of Frankenstein might fit in as the DC Universe grows. “I believe they’re still constructing their universe,” Harbour added, “and that’s exciting. As they develop it, I think they’ll discover what fans prefer or what succeeds, and that will play a role in what they choose to do next.
Harbour suggested a playful concept involving Frankenstein crossing paths with Batman and Superman. “Imagine Batman facing off against a furious Frankenstein, or perhaps even Superman! It’s delightful to consider these characters inhabiting the same world. You never know where their paths might lead, and that thought is quite intriguing,” he shared.
Earlier, Gunn had discussed his intention for characters to transition between being animated and live-action, often with the same actor voicing their character as they do in real life. Consequently, it’s quite likely that David Harbour could portray Frankenstein in future DCU live-action productions.
