David Ayer Gives Update on His Cut of Suicide Squad

David Ayer recently shared some unexpected news about the development of his Director’s Cut version of the 2016 movie commonly known as Suicide Squad, a topic that has generated much conversation in recent years.

What did David Ayer say about Suicide Squad?

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding his upcoming film “A Working Man”, Ayer was asked about the prospects of his movie being released. Ayer responded that he thinks DC Studios and CEO James Gunn might prefer to achieve some successes with their current projects before considering his project.

Indeed, it is as you suspect,” Ayer replied when questioned about the project’s current status. “When I recently spoke with James [Gunn], he felt it was crucial to secure some achievements first. DC has a rich history and heritage, and it requires effort to rebuild that intellectual property and steer it in the desired direction. Therefore, it is entirely reasonable for them to proceed in this manner.

Previously stating that he had finished with DC, Ayer also expressed that the film should be watched by those who contributed to it. In the end, however, Ayer acknowledged, “It’s not my intellectual property, and it’s not my studio. So I completely understand James’ actions, and I believe he will achieve considerable success in the paths he’s chosen.

The director additionally discussed the background of his edited version of the film, sharing that his initial edit never had a chance to be screened for viewers. He explained that the film tested was a blend of “my interpretation of their cut and their interpretation of their cut.” While his version predominantly prevailed, it wasn’t the movie he originally created at all.

In 2021, Ayer publicly asserted on social media that he was the director of the original Suicide Squad and explained that his version of the film offered a more complex and emotional narrative. “The studio-released version isn’t my movie,” Ayer declared, emphasizing that he wasn’t referring to the 10-week director’s cut; rather, he was talking about a fully developed edit by Lee Smith, which built upon the exceptional work by John Gilroy.

There’s doubt about whether the intended version of Suicide Squad by David Ayer will be shown to fans, but since fan efforts led to the release of Zack Snyder’s cut of The Justice League, it’s not out of question that something similar could happen.
