As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in intricate mystery stories, I can’t help but feel drawn to the chilling case of Nick Morelos. The details of this tragic tale are reminiscent of the gripping narratives found in my favorite video games – the tension, the twists, and the haunting sense of loss that lingers long after the credits roll.
On Friday, August 23rd at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, Dateline NBC will revisit the chilling murder of ex-marine Nick Morelos from July 2016. The episode titled “Stone-Cold” will disclose shocking aspects of the crime and share in-depth conversations with individuals impacted by this heinous act. Furthermore, it delves into how detectives cracked the case and apprehended James Lapan for the murder.
As reported by Newsweek, it was Nick Morelos’ fiancée who found his lifeless body inside his Tucson, Arizona residence. Concerned because he hadn’t sent a good morning text as usual, she decided to check on him and sadly discovered his tragic fate. Oxygen reports that Morelos’ body bore multiple gunshot wounds. Upon arrival at the scene, investigators noted that an unidentified attacker had shot Morelos eight times, with one bullet striking the center of his forehead.
In their investigation, officials stumbled upon significant proof at the crime scene which eventually led to the capture of the perpetrator. According to reports from Oxygen and KOLD News 13, traces of blood were found in multiple locations within Nick Morelos’ residence, such as his closet, broken window glass, exterior stucco, and a missing section of his rug. After a thorough probe, police arrested James Lapan Jr. on July 22, 2016, and charged him with first-degree murder.
Who killed Nick Morelos & why?
Earlier it was noted that James Lapan was apprehended for the murder of Nick Morelos, accused of first-degree homicide. Simultaneously, a significant development emerged from a discussion between Nick’s brother and Morelos’ work HR, offering valuable insights to the authorities.
It’s been reported that Oxygen claims there were tension between Morelos and Lapan on the job. Lapan allegedly went to HR with complaints about Morelos’ behavior. According to HR, Lapan warned him to address the issue, or else he would find a way to do so. Furthermore, it’s said that Lapan was in a relationship with one of Morelos’ former partners. During the initial questioning by investigators, Lapan stated he was at home when Morelos was murdered. His wife verified that Lapan was sleeping in the house at the time of the murder.
Based on a tip from one of James Lapan’s friends, investigators were led to acquire a search warrant. They searched Lapan’s home and uncovered two spent bullet casings that matched those found within Nick Morelos’ residence. Furthermore, they found trousers with what appeared to be bloodstains. During their search of Lapan’s car, they discovered carpet fibers resembling the rug removed from Morelos’ house. As a result, police apprehended Lapan for the murder and brought him to trial, as reported by Oxygen.
During the court proceedings, it was highlighted by the prosecution that detectives discovered Nick Morelos in a vulnerable state – naked and injured with multiple gunshots – within his bedroom, as reported by KVOA News. Furthermore, the prosecution team detailed the circumstances surrounding James Lapan’s alleged murder of Morelos. They explained, “James Lapan quietly entered Nick’s backyard, climbed onto the roof of his porch, and then attacked Nick in his bedroom. This was a premeditated act, intended to kill Nick.” Additionally, the prosecution discussed the DNA evidence discovered at the crime scene and the discovery of Lapan’s blood inside Morelos’ bedroom.
However, the defense argued that there is significant uncertainty about how James Lapan’s DNA ended up at Nick Morelos’ home. After considering various points, the jury began their discussions and ultimately returned a verdict of guilty. As reported by KGUN 9, the court then handed down a sentence of life imprisonment to him. Furthermore, he was given an extra 10.5 years in prison for the charges related to burglary.
Dateline NBC will explore the case in its latest episode on Friday, August 23, at 10 p.m. ET.
