Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol - Will Daryl find romance in season 2?

As a dedicated fan who’s followed Daryl Dixon’s journey since his lone wolf days, I must say, the latest news about his romantic prospects has me both intrigued and a tad disappointed. While I understand that the writers want to take the story in a different direction, the chemistry between Daryl and Carol is undeniable – it’s like peanut butter and jelly, or Rick and… well, you know.

In the TV series “The Walking Dead,” the character Daryl Dixon was introduced as a way to bring Norman Reedus, who had initially auditioned for another role, onto the show. Initially portrayed as a solitary figure, Daryl forms a friendship with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) and they become quite the dynamic duo over the course of the series’ eleven seasons. The question of Daryl’s romantic life and sexuality has long been a subject of interest among fans. Carol first appears alongside Daryl in season 2. Will this be the season that sees Daryl find love?

In an interview with David Zabel, the showrunner of “The Walking Dead,” in this month’s SFX Magazine, clarified that the writing team has no plans for a romantic relationship between Daryl and Carol. Although fans may perceive sparks between these characters, it is not a narrative they wish to develop.

In the final scene of the series finale of “The Walking Dead,” Carol and Daryl talk about their future plans. As he prepares to depart, they share a heartfelt goodbye and express their love for each other, demonstrating the deep bond between them as soulmates and close friends. While this may resonate with many viewers, fans who root for a romantic relationship between these characters (known as Caryl shippers) may feel let down.

Zabel subtly suggests a potential budding relationship between Daryl and Isabelle (played by Clémence Poésy). Upon his arrival in France, she is the first person he bonds with. To safeguard her nephew Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), she disguises herself as a nun.

Zabel notes, “In the first season, a bond was clearly growing between the characters. We didn’t contrive this but allowed it to happen naturally. Much of the second season focuses on the progression of this relationship and the direction it takes, as well as the small surrogate family comprising Isabelle, Daryl, and Laurent.”

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but ponder over the notion of Daryl forming bonds within a surrogate family, yet predicting audience responses proves challenging. When the primary series introduced a romantic angle between Daryl and Leah (played by Lynn Collins), the fandom, including myself, wasn’t particularly enthused, and made their displeasure quite clear about how they felt Daryl’s narrative was unfolding.

In the upcoming episode of the spinoff series, we see Carol resuming her role in the plotline as she embarks on a quest to locate her friend within U.S. borders. The teaser suggests that she swiftly discovers his whereabouts and sets off immediately to reunite with him. Meanwhile, Daryl stays put in France, working alongside the Union of Hope, still striving to find a path back home.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premieres on AMC and AMC+ September 29.
