As a seasoned gamer of The Walking Dead universe, I have witnessed the evolution of Daryl Dixon from a surly, impulsive character to a beacon of hope and resilience. The latest season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Disson – The Book of Carol has been an emotional rollercoaster, leaving me teary-eyed more times than I’d like to admit.
Title Change: “The Walking Dead: Beyond Carol – Daryl Dixon’s Chronicles
Approach with caution, for the information within this piece may reveal details about Season 2 of The Walking Dead’s storyline featuring Daryl Dixon and Carol.
Daryl Dixon is a character unique to the television show “The Walking Dead,” and he wasn’t originally featured in Robert Kirkman’s comics. Initially, Norman Reedus auditioned for the role of Merle, Daryl’s brother, but that part had already been given to Michael Rooker. However, Reedus’ impressive audition led the creators of the series to develop the character of Daryl specifically to involve Reedus in the storyline.
In the initial appearance of Daryl during season 1’s “Tell It to the Frogs,” he was initially portrayed as gruff, impulsive, and his behavior was adversely affected by his brother Merle. Together, they concocted a scheme to rob the original Atlanta group, which would later evolve into Daryl’s chosen family.
Following the belief that his brother had perished, Daryl had the chance to fashion a fresh existence among the remaining survivors. A unique connection developed between him and Carol Peletier, an abuse survivor portrayed by Melissa McBride. This relationship deepened significantly and proved crucial to their narrative, as demonstrated in the Daryl Dixon series, where Carol embarks on a journey to France to find him.
As a gamer, I’ve always wished for Daryl to find love among the survivors, but he seemed to struggle with believing he deserved such affection. His difficult upbringing and mistreatment from his brother fueled this sense of unworthiness. Many fans, including myself, hoped he would develop a romantic bond with Carol or Connie (Lauren Ridloff), but it wasn’t in the cards for them. There was even a brief romance with Leah (Lynn Collins), but that ended tragically when she betrayed him.
Daryl Dixon meets Isabelle in France
Following his departure from the Commonwealth at the end of “The Walking Dead”, Daryl embarks on a quest to discover any leads regarding Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), hoping there are others who might join their communities. Subsequently, he gets entangled with an unscrupulous crew, leading him onto a vessel sailing towards France.
Among the initial individuals he meets is Sister Isabelle (played by Clémence Poésy), once a resident of the Abbey of Saint Bernadette. Before the pandemic, Isabelle had a wild lifestyle, involving parties, drug abuse, and petty theft. The arrival of her nephew, Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), during the pandemic’s onset, marked a turning point for her. She decided to take up the habit as a nun to safeguard him. Daryl and Sister Isabelle formed an alliance to shield Laurent, who was thought to be humanity’s savior.
In the second season of the show, Isabelle and Daryl’s bond grew so strong that she decided to return to America with him, taking Laurent along. Their connection developed to such an extent that they even shared a kiss, which was unusual for Daryl.
In the second-to-last episode of season 2, I lost Isabelle – a fellow survivor – due to a lethal stabbing by Losang. Carol helped me reach her side before she passed, and we shared some heart-wrenching moments as we bid our farewells. Yet, amidst the sorrow, I didn’t express my love for her, and after her death, it felt like I was denying the reality of her absence.
This originates from Daryl’s sense of unworthiness regarding love and his struggle with losing people. He has made significant progress in accepting affection from his newfound family, yet remains cautious. Following Isabelle’s death, he refuses to acknowledge her absence and instead seeks out Laurent. When Carol attempts to discuss Isabelle with him, even going as far as admitting that Daryl does love her, he dismisses the topic and redirects the conversation back to Laurent. Later, when Daryl speaks to Laurent, the boy verifies that Isabelle loves Daryl, and once more, he shifts the focus away.
In my perspective, the struggle I have in expressing my emotions can be traced back to a challenging, loveless upbringing. When situations evoke strong feelings, I tend to suppress them immediately, moving on swiftly instead. Yet, it’s clear that I cared deeply for Isabelle – her passing is another heart-wrenching loss in my life story.
The final episode of “The Walking Dead: The Book of Carol featuring Daryl Dixon” will be broadcast on both AMC and AMC+ on November 3rd.
