During the latest Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo, Lucasfilm unveiled the authentic title and potential launch period for their upcoming Darth Maul animated series on Disney+. This production will see the return of Sam Witwer, a long-time Star Wars actor, who will once again voice the character of Darth Maul, a role he played in Dave Filoni’s beloved The Clone Wars and Rebels series.
Titled now as “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord”, this series is anticipated to unfold approximately one year following the events depicted in The Clone Wars. Initial details about the project were unveiled by Filoni and Athena Portillo, Vice President of animation at Lucasfilm, during a panel discussion which also included Witwer.

When is the release date window for the Darth Maul animated show?
Presently, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, being developed by Lucasfilm, is aiming for a 2026 release on Disney+. As suggested by Witwer, this upcoming series is expected to delve into unexplored aspects of the title character. Initially, this character was played by Ray Park and Peter Serafinowicz in The Phantom Menace that came out in 1999.
According to Witwer, we’ll discover various unusual aspects of this character. Some traits might surprise you, but they align perfectly with his past experiences.
Apart from the Darth Maul series, the studio is also actively developing two additional animated shows. One of these new projects is an anthology series called Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, which is set to premiere on May 4, 2025. Furthermore, Lucasfilm has announced that Season 3 of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures will be released later this year.
