Darkest Dungeon 2 – Inhuman Bondage DLC expands the roguelike with a new region

As Darkest Dungeon 2 enters its second year, Red Hook Studios unveiled the game’s second significant expansion pack, titled Inhuman Bondage. This expansion introduces a fresh region, a new character for players to control, and I was given early access to experience it before its launch.

Among the standout features in this DLC expansion, you’ll find a new playable character – The Abomination. This figure hails from the initial Darkest Dungeon game and offers distinct skill sets depending on its current form. Not only does it have fully-voiced dialogue, but players can engage in flashback encounters to uncover details about its past.

The distinct combat feature of The Abomination introduces an enjoyable twist to each encounter and encourages creative exploration with the content provided by the DLC. However, it’s important to note that when starting Inhuman Bondage, players won’t be able to play as The Abomination right away. Instead, they must first unlock his hero shrines in Confessions, only then can they include him in their team.

Red Hook Studios has unveiled a fresh region within the Catacombs, characterized as a zone with significant potential rewards but also carrying high risk. In this area, players will encounter a novel adversary group, resembling Dungeons & Dragons’ Gelatinous Cube, who pose a new threat due to their robust defense and powerful physical assaults. The Catacombs can be navigated in both Confessions and Kingdoms.

Regarding Kingdoms, we’re introducing a fresh gameplay style as a complimentary update, alongside the debut of Inhuman Bondage. Kingdoms twists the conventional mechanics found in Confessions mode. Instead of advancing an narrative, players now focus on defending their realm from invasions. They traverse the region, finishing quests, enhancing their weaponry, and ultimately confronting a final adversary. Travel is facilitated by stagecoach, and players can halt at inns to upgrade them for additional perks.

Kingdon offers three exciting play modes. In the first one, titled “Hunger of the Beast Clan,” players work together to safeguard the kingdom from the aggressive beastmen. The other two storylines, introducing unique factions, are scheduled for release towards the end of 2025.

Darkest Dungeon 2’s Inhuman Bondage DLC offers a refreshing shift from the main game by introducing a new mode that challenges players to adapt their current strategies, and provides ample additional content that makes it an appealing reason for players who had taken a break from the indie roguelike to return.
