Given this intriguing development, viewers of the crime-drama are left pondering what this connection could possibly be. The storyline so far has depicted Leaphorn and Chee investigating the vanishing and murder of a Navajo youth, while Bernadette becomes embroiled in a conspiracy surrounding human trafficking and drug smuggling.

It appears that the cases of Bernadette, Chee, and Leaphorn might be intertwined through a potentially shady association – a group of farmers who seem to be involved.

In Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 3, detectives Chee and Leaphorn uncover a potential breakthrough in the case of Ernesto Cata’s murder. This clue took them back to a red truck initially spotted in the season opener. Upon their return the following day for further investigation, a suspicious group of farmers skedaddled. However, it was later when Chee was snooping around the farmers’ property that he discovered something significant connected to Bernadette.

Chee came across a bulletin board displaying images of Border Patrol officers, among them was Bernadette. Yet, it remains uncertain as to why the farmers held these particular photos.

It’s plausible that these farmers might have played a role in Ernesto Cata’s murder, as they appear to be connected to Tom Spenser, who is under investigation for human trafficking and is a primary focus of Bernadette’s investigations. There’s a strong possibility that these farmers are working for Spenser. This could be the reason they possess photographs of Bernadette and other Border Patrol agents; it seems they may know the authorities they need to avoid while smuggling, given their association with Spenser.

Additionally, Suzanne pointed out that Halsey drove off in a red pickup truck, and Leaphorn and Chee stumbled upon the farmers around the same time Ernesto went missing. Notably, this very truck was also seen close to the site where the pair discovered the pool of blood.

In other words, if the farmers are suspected of killing Ernesto and they have ties with Spenser, it’s possible that Spenser is the one who actually committed the murder. This makes Bernadette’s investigation into Spenser crucial for Leaphorn and Chee, as it could provide them with the details about how and why Ernesto was killed.
