Daredevil’s Charlie Cox Reveals Why Netflix Canceled Season 4

Charlie Cox, famous for his role as Matt Murdock in “Daredevil,” has recently talked about the show’s cancellation on Netflix and its revival on Disney+. In a recent interview, he revealed that a disagreement between Netflix and Disney was the reason behind the series ending, despite its high popularity. Additionally, Cox shared that he received an invitation to rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe afterwards.

Disney and Netflix’s feud canceled Daredevil Season 4, says Charlie Cox

Charlie Cox revealed in a GQ interview that Daredevil was axed by Netflix back in 2018 despite its strong fanbase. As he recounted, “I received a call late one night, and my supervisor at Marvel Television informed me, ‘They’ve terminated all the shows. All five of them,'” Cox said. He explained that this choice was largely due to a dispute between Netflix and Disney. According to Variety, the deal between Marvel and Netflix meant that Disney couldn’t utilize these characters for two years following the cancellation.

2018 saw Cox voicing his dismay over the sudden termination of the series. “Many of us were hoping for continuation, and I was among them,” he shared with Entertainment Weekly. He added, “It’s just how things in business happen. However, these characters hold significant value for people.” The writers of Daredevil had already commenced brainstorming ideas for a fourth season when Netflix decided to part ways with their Marvel partnership.

After the termination, Cox started acting in plays, one of which was Betrayal. During its run, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige attended a performance without bringing up Daredevil or mentioning Cox himself. “I tried to shake his hand,” Cox explained, “and he was friendly and appreciated the play, but neither Daredevil nor I were mentioned by him.

Back in 2020, I received an unexpected call from Feige out of the blue. I thought it might be a charity event he was inviting me to, but instead, he posed the question, “Would you consider returning?” Surprisingly, I agreed and found myself back in action in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo. The production for Daredevil: Born Again kicked off in 2023, but it underwent significant changes due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Despite the hardships these strikes brought upon our industry, I believe they ended up being a blessing in disguise for our show.

Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 4.
