Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead from “Daredevil: Born Again” have shared insights on a significant character demise featured in the initial episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series.
On March 4, 2025, Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again debuted on Disney+. Continuing from where the Netflix series left off, Charlie Cox once again plays Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio returns as Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin.
In the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again,” Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson reappear as Karen Page and Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, respectively. However, it seems Foggy’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be short-lived, as he meets a tragic end at the hands of Wilson Bethel’s character, Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter, during the initial scenes of the first episode.
What did Daredevil: Born Again’s directors say about Foggy’s death?
Discussing the scene from The Official Marvel Podcast, Benson and Moorhead analyzed the event and clarified why it was crucial for the storyline to incorporate Foggy’s demise.
Moorhead asked, “Isn’t this event the one that shapes the entire season?” He removed his mask and acknowledged he may have overstepped. As we continued, we began to understand the gravity of the situation because the person involved is someone we deeply care about. This realization was especially poignant for Elden, who has spent a considerable amount of time with this character, even though he hadn’t portrayed him for some time. This reflection stirred strong emotions within us.
Benson noted, “Typically, when portraying death in action-oriented entertainment, we use the word ‘often.’ Such events are anticipated within the genre, and while there may be a brief period of mourning, by the end of the third act, redemption occurs, and everything returns to normal. However, this series depicts grief in a manner that more accurately reflects real life – it doesn’t just dissipate after a few acts. Any violence depicted has lasting repercussions similar to those experienced in reality.
Moorhead pondered, “How can a series portray such grave repercussions if it never ends up harming anyone we genuinely empathize with? It’s like detonating an atomic bomb in his life, and more so, in the life of Daredevil. The entire season, and even beyond, revolves around him grappling with the aftermath of his friend’s death.
The first three episodes of Marvel‘s Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+.
