As a seasoned gamer who has dabbled in the world of movie sets and productions, I must admit, the sudden departure of Joaquin Phoenix from Todd Haynes’ queer romance movie left me feeling a tad like a player getting disconnected mid-game – it’s frustrating, unexpected, and leaves you wondering what could have been.
Danny Ramirez has recently voiced his thoughts on the sudden and unsatisfying departure of Joaquin Phoenix from Todd Hayne’s proposed queer love story film project.
2023 saw the announcement that Haynes, known for directing Carol and May December, was working on a romantic movie with an adult theme, focusing on two male characters. Alongside Ramirez, Phoenix had been chosen as one of the principal actors in this yet-unnamed production. However, according to reports, Phoenix left the set prematurely, five days before filming was due to begin in Guadalajara.
Due to Phoenix’s departure, the previously rated NC-17 movie project has been put on hold, and there are currently no plans to replace the actor for that specific role.
What did Danny Ramirez say about Joaquin Phoenix’s exit?
At the Academy Museum Gala held on Saturday night in Los Angeles, the actor – famed for his performances in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Look Both Ways, No Exit, Top Gun: Maverick, and other productions – shared with Variety that he found Heath Ledger’s departure from the film “quite unfortunate.
Ramirez expressed that the experience only fueled his motivation even further, encouraging him to continue moving forward, to persist, and knowing he’s on the correct path with the right approach. This is what excites him,” stated Ramirez.
He went on to say, “This is indeed a quite intricate predicament. The auditioning phase was lengthy, and what I took away from it was essentially the artistic confirmation of matching up against [Phoenix] in this compatibility test… There was an instant that made me think, ‘I’ve reached the performer milestone.’
In the 1930s, the project centered around a romantic tale of two men, who had departed from Los Angeles for Mexico, was conceived as an endeavor to depict their relationship. It’s said that this concept originated with Phoenix, and he collaborated on the screenplay with Haynes and Jon Raymond.
The project’s realization is yet uncertain without Phoenix, and Ramirez mentioned to Variety that the latest information they have is “hopefully” it will happen.
