In a recent development, Dani Busboom Kelly has been appointed as the new head coach of the volleyball team in Nebraska, taking over from John Cook who had served for 25 years.
Troy Dannen, Nebraska’s Athletic Director, announced her decision to hire Busboom Kelly as the new head coach. With this appointment, Kelly becomes the fourth coach in the team’s history. She will sign a six-year contract and be officially presented on February 6 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, as reported by Sports Illustrated.
Over the past eight years, Busboom Kelly served as Louisville’s head coach, achieving an impressive win-loss record of 203 victories against 44 defeats (a remarkable .822 winning percentage). During her tenure, the Cardinals advanced to two NCAA Championship finals, three NCAA semifinals, and five regional finals. Moreover, they claimed four Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) titles. Prior to assuming the head coach position, she was part of Nebraska’s coaching staff from 2012 to 2016, helping the team clinch the 2015 NCAA Championship.
From Cortland, Nebraska, I, Busboom Kelly, graced the Nebraska volleyball team from 2003 to 2006. In my senior year, I switched roles from setter to libero, leaving a lasting impact as I stand among the program’s all-time greats in both digs (1,281) and assists (2,873). I was instrumental in helping Nebraska clinch a national championship in 2006, along with three Big 12 titles and two NCAA Final appearances.
Following her graduation, she accumulated coaching experience at Tennessee and Louisville, then returned to Nebraska as an assistant coach under Cook. Her duties included working with setters, liberos, outside hitters, and recruitment. During her tenure as an assistant coach, she contributed significantly to Nebraska’s victory in the 2015 NCAA Championship.
Wife of ex-Nebraska football player Lane Kelly, Busboom Kelly, is now back in Nebraska. With her background as both a player and coach, she assumes leadership of a highly accomplished college volleyball program. Together with her son, Boone, they form this dynamic trio.
