As a dedicated fan of “Dancing with the Stars,” I can’t help but feel deeply moved by the nomination of the show for Outstanding Choreography at this year’s Emmys, especially for the emotional tribute to Len Goodman. Len was a beloved figure in the ballroom dance community and his absence from the show was felt deeply not only by those behind the scenes, but also by fans like me who tuned in week after week.
I’m thrilled to share that “Dancing with the Stars” is among the 2024 Emmy nominees, recognized for Outstanding Choreography in the Variety or Reality programming category! Two captivating routines, “Moon River” and “La Vie en Rose,” choreographed by Jenna Johnson and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, have earned this distinction. However, it’s the heartfelt tribute to Len Goodman that leaves us all teary-eyed – a poignant moment for the show’s creators, performers, and dedicated fans like me who have followed the series through its many seasons.
In season 31, Goodman decided to step down from the show and devote more time to his loved ones. With professional commitments in Los Angeles and personal life in England, he made this announcement public in November 2022. Sadly, just under six months later on April 22, 2023, Goodman lost his battle with prostate cancer at the age of 78.
The well-known ballroom dancer, who was adored by his colleagues and friends at “Dancing with the Stars,” as well as the viewing audience at home, received a heartfelt tribute when it was announced that the mirrorball trophy would now carry Goodman’s name in honor of his enduring legacy. Given his long-standing association with the show, starting from its inception, and his significant influence on the professional dancers, many of whom had known him since their early dance training days in the competitive circuit, this recognition was truly fitting.
As devoted fans, we anticipated that season 32 wouldn’t pass without paying tribute to him through a heartfelt performance. We expected it to be an emotional experience. The dance was exquisitely executed with a straightforward waltz rhythm, avoiding any distractions or complications, and in honor of a beloved song he always cherished.
The dance begins with a top hat situated at the center of the dancefloor, bathed in the limelight. This hat is subsequently collected by Derek Hough, a judge and ex-pro on “Dancing with the Stars,” along with his sister and co-host, Julianne Hough. Together, they gracefully enter into a waltz position. After savoring their solo dance moment, they are soon joined by other dancers, among whom are:
- Kym Johnson
- Anna Trebunskaya
- Karina Smirnoff
- Edyta Sliwinska
- Tony Dovolani
- Louis van Amstel
- Maks Chmerkovskiy
- Mark Ballas.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but be in awe of Johnson and Chmerkovskiy’s mesmerizing dance performance. The refined elegance, the deep emotion, and the exquisite camerawork that captured every breathtaking moment have left an indelible impression on me. It comes as no surprise that they have earned yet another nomination for their enchanting waltz to “La Vie en Rose.” I still remember their captivating semi-finals performance in season 32, which was a testament to their unwavering dedication and exceptional talent.
