Damon Wayans Sr. Praises Jim Carrey: ‘He’s Our Eminem’

In a recent conversation, Damon Wayans Sr. lavishly praised the acting great Jim Carrey, likening his comedic talent on ‘In Living Color’ to that of Eminem in the rap world.

What did Damon Wayans say about Jim Carrey?

During a recent conversation with Shannon Sharpe on his Club Shay Shay podcast, Wayans discussed their past collaborations with Jim Carrey on In Living Color. He expressed that himself and his brothers continue to hold immense pride over the success that Carrey achieved. Wayans referred to Carrey as “our Eminem,” implying he knew Carrey would be exceptional when he was first introduced to Keenen Ivory Wayans.

From the very start, I could tell he was exceptional, and it didn’t take Keenen Ivory Wayans much time to realize, ‘He’s the one’, since they were considering every white actor in Hollywood for that role. In essence, he is our equivalent of Eminem.

Wayans stated that he and Carrey often performed together at comedy clubs, with Carrey consistently delivering outstanding performances.

According to Wayans, Jim Carrey and I once performed in comedy clubs. Jim Carrey is exceptionally skilled at impressionism, able to mimic figures such as Sean Penn, Michael Landon, and others in a unique way. His performances would often earn him standing ovations, which is quite rare for a comedian – typically only a select few can manage a 20-minute set. This just goes to show how talented he was. However, Carrey didn’t enjoy doing the impressions because people thought that was all he could do.

To this very moment, he continues to view Carrey as part of his extended family, and stated that all the comedians from his upbringing who also graced In Living Color are still dear friends of his.

Speaking about Jim, it’s always filled with affection, as if he’s part of my family. It reminds me of reuniting with old friends; the bond is instantaneous, like no time has passed. We converse freely about various topics without any bitterness or animosity – only love. This sentiment extends to David Alan Grier, Tommy [Davidson], and Jamie – it’s all love from me because we fought a hard battle together and emerged victorious.
