As a die-hard fan of both Star Wars and Steven Knight’s exceptional storytelling, I must admit that the news of Knight exiting the upcoming Rey movie has left me a tad concerned. With his masterful touch on series like Peaky Blinders, Taboo, and See, I was eagerly anticipating how he would weave the Star Wars universe’s rich tapestry.
Known primarily for creating BBC’s Peaky Blinders (from 2013 to 2022), Steven Knight is no longer connected with the forthcoming Star Wars film centered on Daisy Ridley’s Rey character from the sequel series. In March 2023, it emerged that Knight had joined the project after Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson had left their roles as screenwriters.
Screenwriter Steven Knight exits Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars movie
Leaving as screenwriter by Steven Knight could potentially postpone Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Star Wars film, currently unnamed but often referred to as Star Wars: New Jedi Order in media outlets. In September 2024, whispers suggested that the production of this movie had been temporarily paused at Lucasfilm, with filming not expected to start until 2025.
Notably, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of Ms. Marvel fame remains attached to the project as the director.
In the upcoming film by Obaid-Chinoy, we find that the story continues from where it left off in the sequel trilogy, where Rey first appeared. Orphaned scavenger on the planet Jakku, Rey later uncovers her surprising lineage as the granddaughter of Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine). In the final installment of the trilogy, Rey renounces her Sith heritage and embraces her new identity as “Rey Skywalker.” The movie is expected to focus on Rey, who will be setting up a new Jedi Order 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Rumors from April 2023 suggest that Rey might not be the central character in this film but instead may play a mentor role similar to Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Significantly, Knight boasts a substantial body of work in film and television that spans across various platforms like AppleTV+ (See from 2019-2022), BBC (Taboo in 2017 and This Town in 2024), FX on Hulu (The Veil in 2024), Netflix (a feature-length Peaky Blinders continuation titled The Immortal Man), and Disney+ (the historical drama series A Thousand Blows, due for release in 2025). Additionally, he has penned screenplays for movies such as Closed Circuit (2013) and Spencer (2021), with Maria (2024) also on his writing credits.
