Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are fighting Twisters, but not on Netflix

As a huge fan of disaster movies and blockbusters, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of “Twisters,” the long-awaited sequel to the iconic ’90s classic “Twister.” The prospect of watching storm chasers in action on the big screen once again is simply thrilling!

As a dedicated gamer and movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited when summer rolls around and the big-screen offers up its share of epic disaster movies, with the biggest names in Hollywood taking center stage. This year is no exception, as we’re about to witness the release of Twisters, the long-awaited follow-up to the ’90s smash hit Twister. Unfortunately, for those of us who haven’t managed to secure a physical copy or find it streaming on services like Netflix, we’ll have to miss out on both the original and this new addition to the franchise.

The movie “Twisters” is set to be released in theaters on July 19. With positive reviews and extensive marketing efforts, it may stay in theaters for several months before being offered for rental or purchase through video on demand services. As of now, a specific streaming release date has not been announced, but it’s anticipated that the film will eventually become available on a streaming platform later in 2023.

Twisters won’t be on Netflix after theaters

As a big fan of movies, I’m always excited when I hear about films with unique distribution deals. In the case of “Twisters,” being a co-production between Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., it’s anyone’s guess where we’ll be able to catch it next. Universal takes care of North American distribution, while Warner handles international – so it could potentially end up on Peacock or Max after its theatrical run.

To watch the “Twister” movie either on Max or Netflix, you need a subscription. At present, the 1996 original film is accessible on Max with your subscription. Furthermore, who knows what the future holds? Maybe someday, both movies will become available on Netflix. We’ll keep you informed about their availability there.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, known for her roles in “Where the Crawdads Sing” and “Twisters,” and Glen Powell, who acted in “Anyone But You” and “Hit Man,” are among the stars of the Netflix hit movie about tornado chasers. Joining them are Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, David Corenswet, and other recognizable names, including James Paxton, the son of the late Bill Paxton from the original production.

Check out the official synopsis via Universal Pictures:

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

It’s clear that “Twisters” would likely see impressive viewership on streaming platforms like Netflix. However, securing the rights for this movie may not be an immediate possibility. Movie studios often prioritize keeping their content exclusive to their own streaming services before licensing it out. For example, DreamWorks movies can be found on both Netflix and Peacock, but they’re initially available on Peacock before moving to Netflix for a limited time. Similar restrictions apply to Sony’s collaboration with Netflix.

While it’s true that many people would like to see both movies on Netflix, unfortunately, we need to go to Max for the 1996 classic and catch the summer premiere of the new sequel in the theater. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a change in plans down the line! In the meantime, be sure to watch the trailer for the upcoming blockbuster and make arrangements for when and how you’ll be able to catch it.
