Daisy Coleman’s Cause of Death: What Happened?

Daisy Coleman’s Cause of Death: What Happened?

As a gamer and someone who values the stories of strong and resilient individuals, I was deeply saddened by the tragic tale of Daisy Coleman, as portrayed in the Netflix documentary “Audrie & Daisy.” Her story is a heart-wrenching reminder of the devastating consequences of sexual assault and the long-lasting effects it can have on its victims.

In 2016, the Netflix documentary “Audrie & Daisy” shared the tragic tales of two young girls, Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman. According to the film, these girls were victims of sexual assault while they were still minors. Sadly, Audrie took her own life after facing ridicule and shame from her community following the assault. On the other hand, Daisy Coleman bravely spoke out about the traumatic experiences she and her family went through. However, it is reported that four years after the documentary’s release, Daisy also ended her life by suicide.

Based on the documentary, Daisy Coleman clandestinely left her house and joined her friend prior to attending a party. As reported by TIME Magazine, they socialized with high school boys there. Following excessive consumption of alcohol, Coleman lost consciousness. It was during this time that the sexual assault is said to have occurred, as detailed in The Guardian. The suspect, identified as Matthew Barnett, is a senior male. After the assault, he allegedly abandoned Coleman outside her house in freezing temperatures. Subsequently, Coleman’s mother found her outside their home, dressed only in a T-shirt.

The documentary also revealed that Daisy Coleman accused Matthew Barnett of sexual assault. However, he claimed that the sex was consensual and denied leaving her outside her house. Citing her mother, The New York Times mentioned that Daisy Coleman suffered harassment in school and online after the incident. However, in January 2014, Barnett pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and received a sentence of two years in probation, per CBS News.

Later, Coleman moved to Albany and took up the cause of supporting other survivors, working on a project called SafeBAE. Sadly, her mother revealed in August 2020 that Coleman had taken her own life at the age of 23.

What was Daisy Coleman’s cause of death?

In her Facebook post, Melinda Coleman shared the heartbreaking news that her daughter, Daisy Coleman, took her own life. Melinda described Daisy as an extraordinary child, expressing her deep sorrow by stating, “I wish I could have carried her pain for her. She never truly healed from what had happened to her, and it’s just so unfair. My precious daughter is gone.”

According to CBS News, Melinda Coleman was informed of her daughter Daisy’s passing after she failed to reach her. Upon learning this, Melinda reached out to the police for a wellness check. Subsequently, two friends of Daisy shared with People Magazine that she had been subjected to stalking and harassment from a man prior to her demise. These friends asserted that the authorities were aware of these allegations. Nonetheless, the authorities reported that Daisy filed a report on the day she took her own life. They also disclosed that her cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Coleman’s friends spoke out against those attributing her death solely to the sexual assault incident in 2012. According to a friend interviewed by People Magazine, “The media is blaming her suicide on her rape, but overlooks that she was dealing with so much beforehand. She would prefer suicide than let this man harm her further.” The magazine also examined Coleman’s social media activity where she mentioned an alleged stalker who had visited her home and relentlessly knocked on the door.

Based on the police report, Daisy Coleman passed away following a welfare visit. Tragically, only four months later, Daisy’s mother, Melinda Coleman, took her own life at the age of 58, as reported by NBC News.

Audrie & Daisy is available to stream on Netflix.
