As a devoted fan with over two decades of immersion in the intricate tapestry of Westeros, I can confidently debunk the far-fetched theory that Daemon Targaryen is the Night King.
In the realm of ‘House of the Dragon‘ and ‘Game of Thrones’, numerous intriguing fan theories abound. Some of these theories align with reason, and surprisingly, some elements of them were mirrored in the world of ‘Game of Thrones’. However, many others seem far-fetched or implausible altogether.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but notice an intriguing theory circulating on Reddit during the first season of “House of the Dragon.” Some viewers speculated that Daemon might be linked to the Night King. This theory stems from two key observations: Daemon shares a striking resemblance with the Night King, and the fact that Daemon mysteriously vanishes without a trace in the books, implying he might have transformed into something else, possibly the Night King.
It wasn’t logical for the Daemon character to be the Night King in the storyline earlier, but the final episode of House of the Dragon Season 2 has definitively shown that such a scenario is not possible.
Game of Thrones already showed us the making of the Night King
To understand the origin of the Night King, one need only watch “Game of Thrones”. This powerful figure was crafted by the Children of the Forest using an ancient ritual, where they turned a First Man into the Night King as a means of self-defense. However, this act ultimately led to complications not just for them, but also for the entire world.
The First Men inhabited Westeros much earlier than when the Targaryens arrived. Daemon Targaryen comes about a century after Aegon’s Conquest. Therefore, it’s illogical to believe that Daemon could be the Night King, and we know from what we’ve seen that the First Man who transformed into the Night King was not Daemon Targaryen.
House of the Dragon has shown Daemon the vision
It’s understood that Aegon the Conqueror was said to have dreamt about the White Walkers and the Prophesied Prince. This prophecy has been carried forward from ruler to heir during the Targaryen dynasty, with Rhaenyra sharing it with Jacaerys not long ago. In her conversation with Alicent, however, Rhaenyra made it clear that Alicent misunderstood Viserys’s final words by referring to the Prophesied Prince as just a “story.”
In the closing episode of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, Daemon experienced a prophetic vision. Within this vision, he glimpsed a white walker and Daenerys Targaryen, suggesting to him that the dream of Aegon (the fulfillment of which lies beyond The Wall) is indeed a premonition of death.
Daemon is not the Night King. It’s time to put that fan theory to rest.
