Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 is “a match” for Xbox Series S, but it can sometimes look even better

Among the highly anticipated titles for the Nintendo Switch’s upcoming launch, the Ultimate Edition of CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 stands out as a remarkable demonstration of the console’s potential. Following a challenging debut on previous-generation platforms, this immersive sci-fi role-playing game serves as a testament to the Switch 2’s capabilities.

According to Digital Foundry’s tech analysis of footage from Nvidia, it was found that the graphical assets in the Switch 2 version of the game are comparable to its PS4 counterpart. Moreover, the analysts noted that the quality on Switch 2 is even superior when it comes to image clarity. Remarkably, they also mentioned that the new version holds up remarkably well against the Xbox Series S version of the same game.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 better than PS4?

In the most recent installment of the DF Direct Weekly podcast, analyst Tom Morgan discussed how Cyberpunk 2077’s RPG for the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a sharper visual quality due to its improved resolution.

Morgan clearly stated that there’s no debate when it comes to image quality between the two versions; he pointed out that the latest handheld significantly surpasses the other in terms of sharpening details, diminishing noise, and addressing the long-standing issue of temporal shimmer, which has been a significant problem with this particular game.

What about Series S?

The contest becomes even more intriguing when we consider how the game fares against its version on the Xbox Series S. Although the Nintendo Switch 2’s CPU operates at a slower pace and thus lacks a 60fps mode found in the less expensive Xbox, it manages to maintain a comparable level of quality with the game’s performance mode.

Thanks to advanced DLSS image reconstruction, the upcoming Xbox version of Cyberpunk 2077 in Switch 2 boasts superior detail and clarity compared to its predecessor’s FSR 2 technology. This enhancement is particularly noticeable in elements like character clothing textures and background details such as moving fences. Interestingly, even though Switch 2’s internal resolution might be technically lower, it significantly reduces the shimmering issues observed on Series S, offering a smoother gaming experience overall.

Essentially, the Xbox Series S boasts a higher resolution than the Switch 2’s upcoming version. However, DLSS outperforms FSR 2 significantly in terms of clarity in still images, though it’s not entirely flawless. Fast-paced scenes and intricate environments can lead to problems with details on moving objects like hair and background items.

How about that performance?

Previously discussed, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Cyberpunk 2077 won’t achieve a constant 60 frames per second (fps), but it will offer a 720p/40fps mode instead. However, even the footage showing the game’s 30fps framerate cap has some imperfections. Particularly during driving scenes, the game frequently skips frames and dips as low as 20fps at times.

In Cyberpunk 2077, certain missions can be extremely demanding due to the heavy city battle at the start of the game, for instance. Although CDPR has room for improvement and addressing major performance problems, it’s not shocking that the game struggles with high CPU usage as you navigate through the busy Night City.
