The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 offers Nvidia’s DLSS image reconstruction and hardware-accelerated ray-tracing capabilities, but so far, no games have been demonstrated using these features. Initially, Cyberpunk 2077, which was previewed during the Nintendo Direct event, did not utilize DLSS at all. However, CD Projekt RED has confirmed that the game will incorporate this technology upon its release.
Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2 uses DLSS
In a conversation with Digital Foundry, CD Projekt RED revealed that Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS) will be enabled at launch for Cyberpunk 2077. This means higher resolution graphics will be available in both handheld and docked modes. Across all game modes, DLSS will enhance visual quality, and players won’t have the option to deactivate this image reconstruction technology.
Furthermore, it seems that the DLSS image reconstruction variant has been tailored as a novel adaptation, optimized for the tensor cores embedded in the custom Nvidia System-on-Chip (SoC) found within the Switch 2 hardware.
The developer shared that they’re employing a specific version of Deep Learning Super-Sampling (DLSS) designed for potential Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, which is fueled by Nvidia’s Tensor cores. This game incorporates DLSS across all four modes, making it functional in both handheld and docked settings. The performance and visual quality differ depending on whether the device is docked or in handheld mode.
In the Quality Mode of Cyberpunk 2077, when played on a console or PC, you’ll get a frame rate of 30 frames per second, though the resolution isn’t explicitly stated. However, if you switch to Performance Mode on a TV that supports 120Hz refresh rates, you’ll see the game at 40 frames per second. For handheld players, in Quality Mode, you’ll see the game at 30FPS but with a reconstructed resolution of 1080p, while Performance Mode offers 720p at 40 frames per second.
Players who’ve tried the game on the Nintendo Switch 2 during previews have reported that it can run around 20 frames per second in heavily loaded scenes. However, it’s important to note that the current version is still under development. Given its high intensity when it was first announced for the handheld device, there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding this promising port.
