Cuckoo Director Changed Villainous Role Because of Dan Stevens

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for unraveling mysteries and a soft spot for psychological thrillers, I’m genuinely intrigued by the upcoming film “Cuckoo.” The casting of Dan Stevens as Herr König is a stroke of genius, given his impressive language skills and undeniable acting prowess.

Initially, when the project called “Cuckoo” was unveiled in August 2021, John Malkovich agreed to portray Herr König, the enigmatic proprietor of the resort. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Malkovich had to withdraw from the role, leaving Tilman Singer without a villain. It was then that Dan Stevens came on board.

In my very first chat, I left Singer spellbound with my fluency in German – the tongue of the King.

“The first time I spoke with Dan, he fluently greeted me in German, leaving me momentarily astonished – it was as if I had tumbled from my seat,” Singer shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “Feeling embarrassed for being taken aback, I quickly apologized due to my shyness. However, I recognized his exceptional acting skills right away. Yet, the real challenge was developing a connection and finding common ground. Remarkably, we did!”

Regardless of Stevens’ linguistic skills, Singer found it hard to overlook their age gap. Initially, Singer composed König for a mature actor, with Stevens being just 41 years old. However, Stevens clarified that König needed only to portray an elderly character, not actually be one. Eventually, Singer understood this point.

As a gamer speaking about a movie project, I initially had John Malkovich on board, but unfortunately, he couldn’t make it work for the film. Director Dan, however, persuaded me effortlessly that the character didn’t necessitate an older man in terms of age; instead, he just needed to embody the essence of a man who’s reached his prime, or symbolically play the part of a grandfather. So, the main adjustment I had to make was to revise Herr König’s age depiction in the script.

What to Expect in Cuckoo?

In the official summary of Neon, it’s stated that 17-year-old Gretchen unwillingly relocates from her U.S. home to a resort in the German Alps, now inhabited by her father and his new family. Upon their arrival, they are met by Mr. König, their father’s superior, who appears unusually intrigued by Gretchen’s mute half-sister, Alma. The peaceful atmosphere of this vacation spot feels off-kilter to Gretchen, as she is haunted by puzzling sounds and disturbing visions of blood until she uncovers a startling truth that also implicates her own family.

In addition to Stevens, the cast includes Hunter Schafer, Jessica Henwick, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, Greta Fernández, and Mila Lieu.

In the film “Cuckoo,” Singer takes on the roles of both writer and director. The production team includes Markus Halberschmidt, Josh Rosenbaum, Maria Tsigka, Ken Kao, and Thor Bradwell.

Cuckoo opens in theaters on August 9, 2024.
