CS2: G2 upset by Heroic in IEM Rio opening game, facing elimination today

As a seasoned gamer with years of Counter-Strike under my belt, I must say I’m feeling a bit uneasy for G2 Esports right now. They’ve had an impressive run, but falling short to Heroic in their opening game at IEM Rio 2024 is a tough pill to swallow. The map veto and CT start seemed like a golden opportunity, yet it didn’t pan out as planned.

After clinching victory at the BLAST Fall Finals about a week back, G2 Esports suffered a defeat in their initial match against Heroic, during the IEM Rio 2024 tournament.

G2 is only one loss away from elimination in Rio!

It seemed advantageous for Team G2, as the map veto led to only Dust 2 being played in the series, and they were given the initial attack (T) position on that map.

This CT-site however did not go according to plan. They managed just 2 rounds all half!

The second of those came off a nice clutch from m0NESY:

During the latter part of the game, G2 gradually gained momentum for a turnaround, narrowing the gap to just 4 rounds at 6-10. Eventually, Heroic managed to secure their victory, reaching 12 points and thus claiming the map and series point.

G2 did not surrender and fought hard, winning 4 rounds on the spin.

As G2 were on the verge of securing overtime at 10-12, Heroic’s Rasmus “sjuush” Beck ended the match spectacularly with a superb triple kill using his Five-seveN.

Heroic’s René “TeSeS” Madsen was leading the scoreboard, just missing out on 30 kills.

As a seasoned player who has experienced my fair share of ups and downs in competitive gaming, I can say that this development is truly disheartening for the G2 side. With a crucial match against Eternal Fire looming later tonight, they’re at risk of being knocked out early if things don’t go their way. Having been in similar situations myself, I know how much effort and determination it takes to prepare for such high-stakes games. Here’s hoping that G2 can rise to the occasion and pull off a victory, proving once again why they are among the best in the game.

What do you think, will G2 win this game? Can they make a run through the lower bracket?
