Crypto Chaos: Hacker Roasts Investigator After Swiping $42M! 😂💸

So, Coinbase just had a little “oopsie” that affected over 69,000 users. You know, just your average Tuesday in the crypto world! The hacker behind this debacle decided to throw some serious shade at our favorite blockchain sleuth, ZachXBT. This guy is like the Sherlock Holmes of crypto, but instead of a magnifying glass, he’s got a keyboard and a lot of sass. The attacker thought it would be hilarious to mock him through a public Ethereum transaction. Because why not? 😂

Now, this little escapade is estimated to have cost Coinbase users a whopping $300 million. On May 21, the hacker used Ethereum’s input data message feature to drop a classic “L bozo” during a transaction where they swapped over $42.5 million worth of Bitcoin for Ether using Thorchain. I mean, who knew blockchain could be so… theatrical? 🎭

And just to add a cherry on top of this digital sundae, the message “L bozo” was accompanied by a link to a YouTube video of NBA legend James Worthy puffing on a cigar. Because nothing says “I’m winning” like a basketball star enjoying a stogie while you’re busy being a loser, right? The hacker clearly thinks ZachXBT is about as effective as a screen door on a submarine. 🚢

According to Etherscan, the same wallet address, cheekily named “Fake_Phishing1158790,” transferred an additional 8,698 ETH (that’s about $22.6 million, in case you were wondering) about an hour after the mockery. Talk about a mic drop! 🎤

Coinbase Breach

So, how did this all happen? Well, it turns out that some attackers sweet-talked a few overseas customer support agents into giving them unauthorized access to Coinbase’s internal systems. Classic! After the breach, these digital bandits demanded a $20 million ransom from Coinbase to keep users’ personal data off the dark web. Because who doesn’t love a good extortion plot? 💰

Coinbase, being the brave knights they are, said “no thanks” to the ransom and instead launched a $20 million bounty program for anyone who could help catch these cyber villains. Meanwhile, the attackers were busy using the stolen data to scam users out of their cryptocurrencies. But don’t worry, Coinbase promised to reimburse the victims. How generous! 🙄

As a result of this whole fiasco, Coinbase estimates they might need to shell out between $180 million and $400 million to clean up this mess. So, if you see a bunch of Coinbase employees suddenly taking up yoga, you’ll know why! 🧘‍♂️
