James Gunn has provided a clear account of how the first season of ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’ align with the continuity of the DC Universe after the debut of ‘Creature Commandos.’
The Creature Commandos marks the initial undertaking within Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe (DCU). Subsequently, Gunn’s Superman movie is set to debut in U.S. theaters this July, preceding the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, scheduled for August.
James Gunn provides clarification on how the events in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which is linked to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), connect with the storyline of the first season of Peacemaker.
What did James Gunn say about the DCU canon?
On Bluesky, Gunn stated, “In a nutshell: The storyline of the Creature Commandos moving forward is considered canonical. For example, Rick Flag Jr was killed based on what we heard Rick Flag Sr discuss in Creature Commandos, not due to any scene witnessed in The Suicide Squad.
In summary, only stories labeled as ‘CC forward’ are strictly canonical; Peacemaker generally aligns with this canon, except for instances involving the Justice League. The Suicide Squad shares many consistencies, though I view it more as an imperfect recollection.
2024 saw me diving into the world of Creature Commandos on Max, where the adult-animated series brought my favorite characters to life in December. Among the talented voice cast, I found myself particularly engaged with Indira Varma voicing the Bride, Sean Gunn as both G.I. Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk lending his voice to Doctor Phosphorus, Will Magnus, and Clayface, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Anya Chalotra as Circe, and Viola Davis portraying Amanda Waller.
You can now watch all seven episodes of Creature Commandos on Max, with a new season set to debut soon. Additionally, Peacemaker Season 1 and The Suicide Squad are both streaming on Max at the moment.
Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
