Creator of Shadow of the Colossus announces new game about giant robots

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for the enigmatic and profound narratives that only Fumito Ueda can weave, the news of “Project: Robot” has sent my gaming spirit soaring! Ever since I first laid eyes on the hauntingly beautiful landscapes of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, I’ve been captivated by the magic that his games conjure.

For nearly five years, the brilliant creator responsible for some of the most remarkable games from the past two decades has been quietly working on a new groundbreaking project, following a period of relative silence since 2016.

Let’s see what information we have so far about the recently code-named game, known as “Project: Robot”. At this point, there isn’t much to share.

The reveal trailer of “Project: Robot”

At the 2024 Game Awards, Epic Games Publishing unveiled a forthcoming game, this time produced by Fumito Ueda – a renowned director and designer from his previous works such as Ico (released in 2001), Shadow of the Colossus (from 2005), and The Last Guardian (launched in 2016). Notably, genDESIGN, the creators behind The Last Guardian, are also involved in this project.

As a dedicated enthusiast, I can confidently say that when it comes to games crafted by Ueda, you’re in for more than just his signature lighting and color schemes. You’re guaranteed an extraordinary gaming journey unlike any other gamer has ever experienced.

Regarding the trailer, it doesn’t provide many specifics about the launch details. But, it certainly sets a tone for the feel of the game.

In this piece, it’s apparent that Ueda is fond of the concept often referred to as the “small person, large creature” motif. Here, we witness a human figure, wrapped in a cloak, scaling a colossal robot.

The unusual, twisted mechanical voice seems to be originating from the robot, and it’s announcing a countdown that appears to be for approximately 65 seconds.

It’s only when one stands upon the tall shoulders of greatness that one can understand why: a colossal, swiftly advancing dark wave is drawing near.

The person mounts the robot’s head, and then the robot separates its head from its main body using powerful engines.

It appears that the robot is making an effort to shield the human from the harmful effects of the blast, even if it means putting itself in harm’s way.

And that’s… all we know. There has been no release date or anything of the sort.

What’s clear is that the game is set to debut on PlayStation. However, it remains undecided which specific PlayStation model will host its launch, and there’s also uncertainty about whether it might be released on other platforms.

Still, we are beyond excited to be able to experience another amazing project by Fumito Ueda, even if it might take a while for it to be released. (As long as it doesn’t get the Hollow Knight: Silksong treatment…)
