As a dedicated fan who has eagerly awaited the return of the dazzling world of Crazy Rich Asians since its enchanting debut in 2018, I find myself both disappointed and intrigued by the latest update from director Jon M. Chu.
Director Jon M. Chu recently shared some insights on the potential sequel to “Crazy Rich Asians,” explaining his reasons for why a follow-up may not be imminent.
What is the latest Crazy Rich Asians 2 update?
During an interview on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Chu was questioned about the possibility of a sequel for Crazy Rich Asians. The director mentioned that at this point in time, he wouldn’t request any actors from the original film’s star-studded cast to come back unless it was worthwhile.
Chu stated, ‘I’ll only return everyone if the outcome is valuable enough. The stakes are high for all involved,'” he explained, adding that they have been making efforts, but haven’t found a suitable solution as of yet.
“I want the best thing. I want it to be worthy of what Crazy Rich Asians 1 was. We’ve tried all different versions. It’s hard because people think the first movie is like the book, but it actually is not. It’s the right spirit, but the plotting is very different. And so, you can’t just go and translate. And we’ve tried versions and the fact is, is that we just haven’t gotten there.”
Currently, Chu is deeply engrossed in crafting the Broadway adaptation of the movie and novel; he views this project as a continuation at the moment. In his words, “For me, the sequel at the moment is the Broadway musical we’re working on. It’s incredibly exciting and enjoyable.
In 2018, the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” debuted, adapting the 2013 novel of the same title written by Kevin Kwan. The film boasted a stellar ensemble cast including Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh.
