Craig Kimbrel Signs 1-Year Contract with Braves

Curious about Craig Kimbrel potentially returning to the Braves? The experienced pitcher has signed a minor league contract, hoping to make a comeback with the team where he first started his career. Following a challenging 2024 season, he is now aiming to reaffirm his place in Atlanta’s bullpen.

Let’s discuss the details of his current deal, his recent difficulties, and potential implications if he rejoins the Atlanta Braves.

Craig Kimbrel returns to Braves for a year

According to various reports, Craig Kimbrel has accepted a contract offer for the minor leagues with his original team, the Atlanta Braves. Should he make it onto the major league squad, he stands to receive a salary of $2 million.

36-year-old pitcher, who broke the Atlanta Braves’ saves record with 186 during the years 2010-14, hopes to continue his career following a challenging 2024 season with Baltimore Orioles. It is yet unconfirmed by the team if an agreement has been reached.

Last year, Kimbrel experienced difficulties on the field, recording a 5.33 ERA over 57 games with Baltimore. In September, the team decided to release him from his contract. So far, he hasn’t signed up for a major league spring training camp this year, indicating that he might require additional preparation before potentially re-entering Atlanta’s bullpen.

If brought onto the team, he might take up one of the open bullpen positions, joining Raisel Iglesias (the closer), Pierce Johnson (setup man), Dylan Lee and Aaron Bummer (both left-handers). The Braves could also look at Enyel De Los Santos and Hector Neris, who are currently non-roster invitees.

Craig Kimbrel, who has been named an All-Star nine times, was honored as the top reliever in both leagues, receiving the National League’s Trevor Hoffman Award in 2014 with the Atlanta Braves and the American League’s Mariano Rivera Award in 2017 with the Boston Red Sox. He has led the league in saves four times, with his last achievement being in 2014, and set a career-high of 50 saves in 2013. His total of 440 career saves places him fifth on the all-time list, and among active pitchers, only Kenley Jansen’s 447 saves are ahead of his.

Craig Kimbrel has participated in nine postseasons across five different teams and was part of the Red Sox team that won the World Series in 2018. The Braves selected him in the third round during the 2008 draft, and he stayed with them until 2015 when they traded him to the Padres as part of a deal that ultimately resulted in drafting Austin Riley.
